Otherwise, you nailed the two that I think are his best work: Ed & Edward. Both of them are quite excellent films.

Big Fish was pretty good but ultimately felt kind of hollow to me. Even Sweeney Todd, beloved by every critic from here to Fleet Street, struck me as forced and artificial, but perhaps I'm biased because I don't care much for musicals.


I'll grant that he's always had a good visual sense. He could have been a legendary Art Director. Instead, he's just an over-praised but average Director.

On the other hand, I found the entire script for that fourth Indy film annoying and -- though Harrison Ford is always an appealing screen presence and was still great as a more mature Dr Jones -- I think the entire project was let down by that pesky Lucas dude's involvement. It has its moments and, again, it's good to see Indy back in action, but the quality (or lack thereof) of Shia The Beef's acting is kind of hard to separate out from the fact his role kinda sucks within a movie that's highly compromised from the start, despite some talented onscreen presences. I wish they'd gone with Frank Darabont's script, that Spielberg loved but Lucas vetoed, because I'm sure it'd have been vastly superior. And no Muttley, or whatever the hell his name was...

Shia LaBouf IS the "annoying smartass horny teen." In every single movie I've seen him in, that is his character. Each role is indistinguishable from the others. It's an assholey character archetype anyway, so an actor really has to sell it for me to not get pissed off. And not only does LaBouf not sell it, I think he really IS an annoying smartass horny teen (or twentysomething, however old he is), in which case, he's not even really acting. I mean, if I wanted to watch a garden-variety douche douching around on camera, I'd watch Big Brother.

Then I saw The Truman Show. That changed my perception. I still haven't bothered to watch his earlier alleged 'comedies,' largely because they look as stupid to me as they did when they first came out, but I did come to concede that he's a talented individual. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind was good, if almost bordering on the verge of being too self-consciously quirky for its own good, and I've liked most of what followed, including Bruce Almighty, The Majestic (love that film!...one of Darabont's less-appreciated works, but very appealing to me for a number of reasons), Man On The Moon and others. Kinda liked The Cable Guy when I got around to seeing it and that one about a number (23?), though neither was a particularly great piece of work...he, at least, was still pretty good.

The Truman Show, though, with a good story, a great director (Peter Weir), and excellent supporting actors (the always-excellent Ed Harris, Noah Emmerich, Laura Linney, etc, etc), let Jim Carrey show me was capable of more than making stupid faces and flatulence jokes. I thought it was an excellent film and I thought Jimbo was an inspired chocie for the role, perfectly suited to his talents.

And, really, I was one who had seen very little of his work but who found him terminally annoying with even a couple of minutes' exposure, the kind of annoying that makes you wish you could land a fist in the middle of that rubberized face...

I kinda like Matt, too. It seems like he's a decent dude. Everyone knows about the naked bongo episode, I'm sure, but I kinda like that he promoted Sahara under his own steam by renting a trailer, emblazoning the film's name on its side, and traveled across the US staying at RV parks and campgrounds along the way. I also like that he's an inveterate backpacker who, in his down time between films, will take off to far-flung places and get amongst it...I can relate to at least that part of his nature. And he (along with a few other prominent Hollywood figures and the like) was great during Katrina, in the aftermath, pitching in and helping to raise awareness of the situation, basically using whatever public cachet he has to draw attention to the reality faced by people in the affected area. All this has nothing to do with his acting, though, I know.

I somewhat liked him in one of his first roles, in Dazed and Confused (to be honest, he was the highlight for me because the film overall didn't move me much, probably because I just couldn't relate at all to the culture portrayed and all the alcohol/drug stuff...similar to how the John Hughes brat-pack films, exemplified by The Breakfast Club leave me utterly cold and usually feeling somewhat hostile toward ALL the characters), but one of my favorites has to be his character in EdTV. Sure, maybe he's not playing far from his own nature there, but he does it so well (GREAT supporting cast, too, especially Woody Harrelson, Sally Kirkland, and the scene-stealing greatness of Martin Landau). I also have a soft spot for Sahara, one of those suspension-of-belief adventures that's larger than life and not seen too often nowadays, the kind that inspires descriptors like "rollicking" or "ripping good yarn." At first I thought he was all wrong for Clive Cussler's literary hero, way too young and not rugged enough, but I love the results and interplay between him and Steve Zahn (for a revelation on Steve Zahn, for anyone who's only seen him as comedic sidekick, check out Werner Herzog's Rescue Dawn). McConaughey's abs look just like mine, too, but less manly and sexy.

He's also proven quite serviceable in more dramatic roles, too, as in Lone Star, A Time to Kill, Contact (I think I first saw him in this one), and Amistad. Yeah, Fools Gold sucked -- like they were trying to remake Sahara without any wit and, possibly, without an actual script (or, at least, one that was worth a damn) -- but I thought his small role in Tropic Thunder was just perfect. I mean, ALL of the roles in that film were perfect, really, and it was Robert Downey Jr who really made it for me (and, yeah, Tom Cruise was quite something in this one), but the Pecker did add to the proceedings even before he and Tivo saved the day. He's no Olivier, perhaps, but he's still an appealing screen presence and usually fun to watch. That's good enough, sometimes.

The thing I most detest about Matthew McConaughey, apart from those overexposed abs, is that I never know how to spell his name...
