FYI: Please update your antivirus scanners now (BBC)
Worm blasts across the web

Many versions of Windows are at risk from MSBlast

A Windows worm dubbed MSBlast is quickly spreading across the net and swamping net connections as it looks for more vulnerable machines to infect.

On infected machines the malicious program also launches an attack against the Microsoft site that holds a software patch that keeps the worm out.

Security firms say the design of the worm is hampering its spread but warn that tens of thousands of computers could fall victim to it.

The vulnerability exploited by the worm has been known about for almost a month and net security organisations have been warning that it would soon be exploited.

As a rule I am against "panic posts" reporting net viruses, but this is genuine, and it behooves you all to keep your virus definition files up to date, especially if you have an always-on (broadband, DSL, or school) connection.

AND NEVER EVER EVER open an email or attachment you don't specifically KNOW THE ORIGION OF, or are not expecting. Confirm the origin of the file before you open it! Practice safe e-mail! (Start by ditching Outlook Express and getting an email proggie that is securable....)

2. I can add: even if you updated yesterday
Due to a touch of paranoia, I updated my virus definitions both the day before yesterday and yesterday. Usually, McAfee would just say "Action cancelled-- your definitions are up to date" or some such after such a short interval. Not this time. Stuff is happening fast.

Macs DO occasionally get virii also. Granted, due to their nature, not many virus makers pay attention to them, but the Mac virii ARE out there!

ON EDIT: This was to be a response to the post by onehandle...
