When was the last time you thanked a land surveyor?
I'm sure they'd greatly appreciate not being taken for granted.

you know I'd have them calling you. Get you those marketing duckets, too.

things could change in a big way if I'm one of the layoffs that is coming but not spoken about by the boss. I could probably do Western Ma. if I finally get cut.

8. Were they wearing vests?
If not you have legal authority to run them down. If that's guilt you don't want to live with then just run down their instrument. If they didn't have an appropriate cone set-up then they end up having to pay you for any damage to your car or psyche.

18. Aw, I'm sorry
The older surveyors are the best - they just know so much more by experience alone. Their advice on property is invaluable.

And the 3 very best surveyors died within a year span.

Another one was in an auto accident and became a quadriplegic.

It was an uncanny coincidence.

Are their records well kept? Or hopefully they had apprentices/ as well?

You don't want stakes unless they're just for putting in a fence or something; permanent markers are the way to go.

31. $700 should have been your first tip-off
I'm sorry you got screwed with that (if you want your property monumented properly and able to have a favorable chance of holding up in court it costs a few thousand, sometimes much more depending on the circumstances). Any bid for any job (no matter how small the property) under $1000 is almost always a fraud - they won't be meeting state regs and judicial rulings which will place the liability on the owner, who can then go after the surveyor. If the contractor was a PLS or under a PLS they should have a complaint lodged with the New Jersey Board for violating whichever NJ law (which will include many ones about public health, being honest, no conflict of interest, no fun).

Yes I'm taking property law affecting the survey profession.

ps: A huge problem in our industry is undercutting. Undercutting has always been a problem with weekend surveyors undercutting actual companies/PLS's with clients not appreciating the liabilities they're putting on the line, but with the economy as it is many companies are now undercutting themselves as well as their rivals. They're losing money to stay afloat another month.

38. Thanks
:)

I was laid off almost a month ago. Even in a industry that wasn't predicted to get hit very hard (pipeline design) because of how far out they have to design them before building and opening for product, we still had clients shutting things down. It goes back to the banks and what the investors are willing to part with for development.

I didn't know you were a surveyor, so that's cool :)
So, how many dicks do you have to work with on a daily basis? :P
I've met a fair share as well as downright incompetant, only out to get paid and don't care how badly they take notes or where they collect data. I don't need ten thousand NG points. I do need to know where all the utilities and obstacles are! lol
