'Barrel monster' creator gets community service
RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina State University student who created a "monster" out of construction barrels and placed it on the side of a road was sentenced Tuesday to 50 hours of community service.

District Judge Vince Rozier deferred judgment against Joseph Carnevale until Oct. 30. If Carnevale complies with the sentence, the charges against him will be dismissed.

Raleigh police charged Carnevale last month with misdemeanor larceny and destruction of property after he took the orange-and-white traffic barrels from a construction site near N.C. State.

The 10-foot "barrel monster, sticking out its thumb for a ride along Hillsborough Street, quickly grabbed attention on social networking Web sites, with hundreds of supporters calling for Raleigh police and the Wake County District Attorney's Office to dismiss the charges.

Check out the comments. Normally it's a cesspool for those who don't know there's a FR. But this article turned into a nice little boost for the value of community art. ;-)

3. Ha. Even the company that makes the barrels
didn't want to press charges. He's brought them all kinds of free publicity.

5. This could have been turned into a really cool PSA against speeding
thru construction areas.

8. I'm surprised the company
hasn't used it in their ads so far.

It would be a fabulous tie-in.

:D

7. WTF!
I hope that his community service involves training others in "barrel monster" techniques - this is a very effective barricade, and a desperately needed note of comic releif.

9. It's a big hit
around here, that's for sure. :-)

I hope there will be more of these or some variation of this. It is definitely eye-catching and fun where the landscape is mostly dull and utilitarian.
