The latter would arguably be more painful, but it wouldn't take as long.

Decisions, decisions.

7. That's Mel Brooks for you.
When it comes to Mel, there seem to be three types of people:

1. Those who love him.
2. Those who hate him.
3. Those who haven't seen any of his movies.

I will always be in camp 1. And for the record, I've watched Spaceballs countless times, and since now you've reminded me that I own it on DVD, I'll probably watch it this weekend.

12. There's a fourth camp: those who recognize how far he's fallen
Seriously. Watch Young Frankenstein and then watch Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Aside from the credits, there's no way to conclude that these films came out of the same man.

Young Frankenstein is brilliant, in part, because it's still an excellent film even if you've never seen any of the old Frankenstein movies; it's strong enough to stand on its own.

Spaceballs is barely funny even if you've seen Star Wars. And if you haven't seen Star Wars, then watching Spaceballs falls somewhere between thumbscrews and being broken on the wheel.

8. Mel's later films were funny but they weren't FUNNY.
Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein were great, Spaceballs, Robin Hood, Dracula are a mixed bag.

15. Loved 'em all, plus History of the World Part 1
I will admit that Mel's earlier work was better, but I still love the newer ones as well.

And before you ask, no, I can't tell you why. I just know that every time I hear Liam Neison say "I should move ze coffin...or ze chandelier..." and I see him make that face, I laugh hysterically. Everyone in my family looks at me like I have a third eye. I don't care.

It's blind loyalty of the worst kind, and I recognize it, but Mel Brooks could put his name on a Jonas Brothers movie, and I'd watch it.

(For the record, I love Disney, but I think Disney Records should be erased from all of time.)

11. Mel Brooks has made classic comedy films

and Spaceballs isn't one of them. That movie made me think he really didn't get the genre he was parodying at all.

20. Watch it
If you are old enough to have seen Star Wars in the theater and saw it's impact on movies, merchandising and pop culture in general, then Spaceballs is pretty good. If not, it's still OK. Nothing worth flaming yourself over.

High Anxiety, on the other hand, was a waste of the movie ticket, even though it was only $1.75 back then. If that was the choice, Flame On!

Soon!

The first movie I remember seeing in a theater is "Empire Strikes Back", so I've always been a huge Star Wars fan. And I can't help but love Spaceballs, still cracks me up every time I watch it!
