Whoopi Goldberg Moving to My Town
Hey, I'm excited! Where she's moving is less than a mile from me.

Whoopi Goldberg moving to West Orange
By Halley Bondy/For The Star-Ledger
October 05, 2009, 6:27PM

WEST ORANGE -- Whoopi Goldberg, star of the “Sister Act” films and co-host on “The View” is moving to an exclusive West Orange residential community.

Goldberg bought a house in west Llewellyn Park under her real name, Caryn Johnson, according to the township’s public information officer. Goldberg bought the house for $2.8 million in August, according to the property’s deed.

The colonial house, built around 1920, has 23 rooms, including a billiards room and a gym and an outdoor pool, according to the Garden State Multiple Listing Service.

Samuel Joseph, the real estate agent who closed the deal on Aug. 24, declined to comment when reached Monday.

Llewellyn Park, a gated community filled with estates, sprawling yards and tree-lined streets, has a history of prestigious residents including Thomas Edison and the Colgate family.

-----------

The real estate agent who sold her the place was also the agent for the house next door to me. He has a nice mansion himself and specializes in selling such houses here.

Here's the gatehouse one has to pass through before getting into the place. This is a historical picture. It still looks pretty much the same.

And here's a pic of a typical mansion there (although not all the homes in LP are mansions):

They have about four-five acres each property.
Whoopi will have an easy commute to Manhattan to do her part on The View. It's only about 20-25" away.

3. I always thought of Llewellyn Park as a bit stand offish and not part of West Orange
you're right though, it's not a bad commute from there.

6. no
That area and west has always been large estates with mansions and carriage houses. Outside of Llewellyn, heading up the mountain west, was all large estates with mansions. That's why they call in the "mansion district."

Then they started splitting off the properties in that area outside Llewellyn Park and building middle and upper-middle income housing, so it's a mixture of large houses/mansions with regular-income type people.

I live in an old carriage house--almost 200 years old. My carriage house was converted to a four BR, four bath house 50 years ago, though. It's back on an old estate with no traffic running through it, which I like a lot.

In recent years, they have put in other large estate developments because of the view of Manhattan from the mountains. Many of those places go for around 6-8 million.

8. I have only been in there a few times
when I worked at a nearby hospital we used to have our employee picnic at one of the board member's mansion. Too high society and fenced in for my tastes.

10. She might dig the Langella version.

Wasn't she romantically linked to him at one time? I have a friend that sells movie memorabilia and collectibles and he's the one who told me she was a huge fan of the Universal Monster movies.
