1. Does she like mysteries?
If so, try any of the Richard Jury mysteries, by Martha Grimes.

18. Carl Hiaasen is a master, I would also suggest Terry Pratchett
his Diskworld novels are a hoot.

4. Cryptonomicon
At first I was like :wtf: because it jumps around times in history and family members connected by actions of each during those times. There's no time travel, thankfully, but you're reading a long story from two different angles, with 2 or 3 stories in each timeframe.

It's a very engaging read, I enjoyed it a lot, I've little doubt that at least ~one~ person will agree.

I thought many of the characters were quite two-dimensional and it seemed that the whole thing was some CS major's wet dream (get rich, get the girl, etc.)

I will say I am the only person I know who has read it who did not like it.

buy the first in the series by Nevada Barr. NB is an active or retire National Park Ranger and her main character is a Park Ranger. All but two of the books are in different parks. All very interesting. ie getting DNA from Bears... :)

Oh for whatever reason, Nevada Barr now lives in Clinton Mississippi.

The Curious Incident of the Dog at nighttime

Anything by the one, the only, Michael Moorcock (probably start with Elric or Erekose)

Anything by Jeff Noon, although I'd start with Nymphomation, then Vert and then Pollen.

Snow Crash - Neil Stephenson

If she's into comics (and who isn't) Barry Ween by Judd "the man off that TV show" Winick.

16. Well, I am a Dean Koontz and Stephen King fan.
Does she like those writers? Right now I'm reading The Face. And if she likes medical suspense novels, Robin Cook has lots of good reads.

17. Darwins Radio~Greg Bear
Greg Bear can be counted on to deliver an engaging read while exploring new territory.

In Darwin's Radio, that territory contains retroviruses, junk DNA, ice climbing, and, possibly, the end of our race -- all in one generation....

Its all plausible: a little scary, a little hopeful...and it's not easily put down. Nice work...and it won the 2000 Nebula and Hugo awards! :)
