dear lovely DUers,
I am an old regular poster so there's probably a lot of new blood that will think I'm spamming, but I promise I'm doing it with noble intentions. I hope these kinds of posts are still allowed, as I've done things like this here with great success years ago. This past fall, in cities across the United States, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society held their annual Light The Night walk to raise funds for cancer research. The LLS funds lifesaving research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers and treatments for other types of cancer. Leukemia is finding new victims everyday in demographics that were otherwise untouched as few as two or three years ago. This disease is desperate for research and with your help we can save lives. In collaboration with a team of other young adults across the US, I raised funds on behalf of the Dear Jack Foundation (for more info, see below). On October 15th, my local team walked in Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge. While the walks are long over, we are still raising funds. Nationwide, our team has raised over $88,000 to date. We are very very close to our goal, but could use help to make it by the year's end. In the past, the great community fostered on this website has helped me raise money for volunteer trips to DC and Tanzania, and I am asking once again for your help to benefit others. At the holiday time, I know we are apt to tighten our wallets especially in light of the recession. I graduated from NYU this past May and am still without full-time work, so I understand the struggle to stretch our funds. Unfortunately, the rates at which leukemia and other life-threatening illnesses hurt individuals won't slow down because we have to. But if a mere 9 people on this amazing website found it in their hearts and wallets to donate $10, I would finally make my personal fund raising goal of $250. To donate, visit the following link:

More on the Dear Jack Foundation: In the spring of 2005 then 22 year old Andrew McMahon and his band Jack’s Mannequin embarked on their first US headlining tour. Before the tour was completed, McMahon paid a visit to his voice doctor in New York City with a list of health concerns. The following morning the results of his blood work landed him in the hospital where he was soon diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. Through the summer of 2005 McMahon underwent two rounds of chemotherapy, radiation treatment and with a stroke of good luck, a stem cell transplant from his sister. Having spent the end of 2005 and the beginning of 2006 recuperating at home McMahon began playing occasional shows around town as well as short headlining runs in support of Jack’s Mannequin’s first major release, Everything in Transit. In an effort to raise money and awareness for cancer research, Andrew founded the Dear Jack Foundation in July 2006.
