Raising money for leukemia research, have until Dec. 31st to make my goal!
dear lovely DUers,

I am an old regular poster so there's probably a lot of new blood that will think I'm spamming, but I promise I'm doing it with noble intentions. I hope these kinds of posts are still allowed, as I've done things like this here with great success years ago. This past fall, in cities across the United States, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society held their annual Light The Night walk to raise funds for cancer research. The LLS funds lifesaving research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers and treatments for other types of cancer. Leukemia is finding new victims everyday in demographics that were otherwise untouched as few as two or three years ago. This disease is desperate for research and with your help we can save lives. In collaboration with a team of other young adults across the US, I raised funds on behalf of the Dear Jack Foundation (for more info, see below). On October 15th, my local team walked in Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge. While the walks are long over, we are still raising funds. Nationwide, our team has raised over $88,000 to date. We are very very close to our goal, but could use help to make it by the year's end. In the past, the great community fostered on this website has helped me raise money for volunteer trips to DC and Tanzania, and I am asking once again for your help to benefit others. At the holiday time, I know we are apt to tighten our wallets especially in light of the recession. I graduated from NYU this past May and am still without full-time work, so I understand the struggle to stretch our funds. Unfortunately, the rates at which leukemia and other life-threatening illnesses hurt individuals won't slow down because we have to. But if a mere 9 people on this amazing website found it in their hearts and wallets to donate $10, I would finally make my personal fund raising goal of $250. To donate, visit the following link:

http://pages.lightthenight.org/nyc/Manhattn09/MMunoff

Thanks for your time. Best wishes throughout the holiday season.
Maggie

More on the Dear Jack Foundation: In the spring of 2005 then 22 year old Andrew McMahon and his band Jack’s Mannequin embarked on their first US headlining tour. Before the tour was completed, McMahon paid a visit to his voice doctor in New York City with a list of health concerns. The following morning the results of his blood work landed him in the hospital where he was soon diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. Through the summer of 2005 McMahon underwent two rounds of chemotherapy, radiation treatment and with a stroke of good luck, a stem cell transplant from his sister. Having spent the end of 2005 and the beginning of 2006 recuperating at home McMahon began playing occasional shows around town as well as short headlining runs in support of Jack’s Mannequin’s first major release, Everything in Transit. In an effort to raise money and awareness for cancer research, Andrew founded the Dear Jack Foundation in July 2006.

2. kicking before going to bed...hopefully DU night owls will too, so others can see this tomorrow
money is iffy right now, but I have performed for free on behalf of leukemia fundraising before, and would do so again (locally) any time I am asked...

5. thanks!
and thank you for doing your part to aid in this important cause. i think it's amazing that those of us without the funds to make a monetary contribution can still find ways to help. what instrument do you play, style of music? i ask because i think that artists and musicians are some of our greatest assets in raising awareness for causes like this. the Dear Jack Foundation, which I am raising funds on behalf of, was actually established by a musician (pianist and vocalist in a rock band). I myself am a photographer & graphic designer.

12. I sing and play harmonica, sax and flute
mostly blues, and 60's rock and soul. Haven't done anything in a while for charitable causes; played to raise funds for a little boy with leukemia a few years ago and haven't done a specifically leukemia related gig since. Not from being unwilling to do these kinds of things, but am not playing as much these days, so not that visible, and so haven't been asked to do any type of charity gig in a while. A guy I play with once in a great while lost his sister a few years ago, but she had a bone marrow transplant at City of Hope, and she lived another ten years after that, when it looked like her time was coming soon. The leukemia did come back and take her life, but she gained the gift of those ten extra years; long enough to get to see her 4 boys grow up. He's an amazing guitarist/keyboard/ singer and plays everything from fusion jazz to country and everything in between, and while I can't speak for him, he's generally willing to donate his talents to leukemia charities although he plays full time and rarely has an open night..... BTW, my brother , and sister-in law are also very involved with a chapter(?) of City of Hope, in Chicago, ...Bless you for what you're doing, and I'm going to see if maybe I can dig up an extra ten bucks....

3. DUers: I've known Maggie for 8 years
Say what you want about me, but I can vouch for Maggie and her impeccable character. She is the REAL DEAL, and she is working her ass off for a GREAT CAUSE.

I wish I could have helped more than I did, but every bit gets us closer. Leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers don't stand a chance if we pull it together. Real lives are affected every day by these scourges, and it's people like Maggie who give us hope that effective, lasting treatments are achievable in our lifetimes. The LLS also helps people have ACCESS to health care professionals so they can learn more about their disease, discuss treatment options, and help them make more informed decisions. Specialists can also be provided to offer emotional support and comfort for patients and their families.

I urge anyone reading this to help Maggie meet her goal! Trade that cheap twelve-pack of beer for a $10 donation. No one would be more appreciative than Maggie. :-)

And if I didn't just speak the Zomby Troof, may Sarah Palin sentence me to be hanged by a death panel!

See? LeftPeople DO FinishFirst!

4. Thanks Zomby!
What a shining recommendation! It has been 8 years already?! JEEZE I am getting so old :loveya:

No takers so far, but I understand. Tough economy right now. But Zomby's right, if just a few of us gave up one night of drinking (come on, I know I drink less than I did when Shrub was still in office) or a case of beer or a bottle of wine... maybe I'd reach my goal :)

6. We both started in 2001
We're the DUers worried about the kids on our lawns, lol.

You, CatWoman, and ZenLefty (remember him?) were among the very first DUers I became friends with on here. :-)

I've see DUers step up before for worthy causes. I hope they see your message and help you reach your goal!

:loveya: :toast:

8. haha
Those kids trampled my garden the other day! Bastards. It has been so long. I started early I guess. I remember those names and how bad ass catwoman was in handling bullshit or stupid statements.

Speaking of memories of the DU of yesteryear. The other day I was thinking of this girl who posted here (mostly in 2003/2004) everyone used to think was hot and every post she made was a picture of herself or about her being drunk. I thought she had such a huge ego and everyone encouraged it. Nobody else seemed to be bothered by it. I just remember my only major major blowout on DU was with her. In the LOUNGE. And then there was that time I was banned from DU for making a Jesse Jackson joke in GD. Everyone else loved me though :D

11. You were banned for THAT?
I had NO IDEA. It takes a lot worse than that to get banned these days. I was banned for ignoring a mandatory ignore, which is a more traditional reason. :D Nowadays you can mimic Newsmax talking points and get +37 recs in 15 minutes.

8 years is a LOT of visits to the store!

15. pretty much
ahaha. it was ridiculous! i remember signing up like 3 more times to try and convince them i was not a freeper but they just automatically banned me each time. i had a few people go on the ask the moderators forum and bitch for me with no luck. eventually i sent them a 10 dollar bill in an envelope and was like, reinstate my account, bitches. so they did. couple years later the mod who did the dirty deed PM'd me and admitted it was his call. turns out he wound up being one of my favorite DUers and he felt guilty :(

16. Wow
$10! You got back on here cheap. ;-) I remember thinking you were just on some long break - I had taken a few myself so I wasn't too aware of what was going on (I find that is the best way to deal with DU: blissful ignorance).

I vaguely remember the drunken pic attention whore, but cannot remember her name. Is it someone banned and safe to mention? LOL

On the other hand, you could be describing half the CURRENT Lounge. :D

I know she went away for a little while. I'll have to do some sleuthing on Google later since I can't even use simple DU search anymore. What's up with that?

9. WOW. Got one! You are incredible!
:loveya: Thank you so kindly. This kind of generosity is what gives me hope on some of the darker days. Your contribution really made a difference. Each and every loved individual that has battled an illness of any kind and lost is the reason we try to find cures. Your dad is remembered and loved, and his memory lives on in hearts of people like yourself, working to make that happen. Thanks again <3

I clicked the "donate now" and it just went back to the "donate" window without acknowledgment , so clicked again and same thing happened. I don't know if I successfully donated once, twice or not at all....( donated as abq e streeter)

26. Good for you; keep at it. Our adpted charity is the local Food Bank, and we both
volunteer a lot of time with them. Your adopted cause is a great one, and I'm sure many people TRULY appreciate your time and effort.

Keep up the good work.
