I know a whole family of them. Is it learned? Is it inherited? It's very annoying.

3. I am not a psychiatrist, but I am a narcissist. We are caused by the intersection of the...
greatest forces known to the universe, and are the reason that the strong nuclear force, the electroweak force, and the gravitational forces were created.

This is especially true of the latter force, by the way.

5. well, there is narcissism and there is narcissism
There is a personality disorder called Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and that is diagnosed by a professional. You can read the symptoms, though, on the Internet just by googling. It is an extremely pernicious and disabling condition. Some call it evil. It's caused by the "narcissistic wound" when there is some rejection by the mother/father at an early age.

And then there is garden variety narcissism -- inflated ego, etc. The "me" society seems to encourage a lot of that today.

9. Thank you. The family iI was referring to has had a hard time of it
there are 5 siblings who all were rejected by their father. It seems to be a crutch for them.

17. I think I worked with 1 of each, simultaneously
The bad one was classic - manipulative, manevolent, vain, miser and theif - tried to get me fired at least twice. Would sneer at people who did a kindness for others, bullied anyone he could, obsequious to a fault to his bosses. I think he'd been wounded bad, and I'm not sure he'd ever had a genuine friend.
The other wasn't that bad a guy - he definitely had the wound. but tried to overcome it most of the time. Trouble is, he would regress at inopprutune moments, and it was hard to get him to look outside his own experience.

Sadly, in that place, there were some so twisted their diagnosis ain't in the book yet.

19. We are all born narcissists
It's a survival thing. In a healthy environment we begin to outgrow it as we become aware of others. In an unhealthy environment we do not outgrow it. Interestingly enough it's not a result of conceit, quite the opposite.
