Name a band/artist of any genre, that you never heard before, that performed live @ a concert
that you attended, and turned you into a fan of his/her/their music afterwards.

For me it was an all-girl, alt-rock band from Stockholm, Sweden, that I saw the year before they broke up in '00. They released only three CDs, the first one being an EP. Their name was Drain STH and they were touring with another alt-rock band at the time that had a lot of radio airplay in the mid-late 90s named Filter, the latter who had a few popular songs that charted, one being "Hey Man, Nice Shot" I saw both bands perform live @ Clutch Cargo's in Pontiac, MI in '99. I still have a poster similar to the image below, and sold my other copy of it at auction on eBay a few years ago.

Drain STH: Crack the Liar´s Smile

All four were pretty hot looking babes as well..."Freaks Of Nature" indeed!! :headbang:

Opened for Rise Against. I had "heard" of them, but never listened to them. They had a couple catchy songs, but the small venue/shitty typical "opening act stage rig" so the sound kind of sucked. I wanted to hear more of them, and lo and behold, they were on Letterman not a week later (doing "The '59 Sound) just killing it! I was sucked in ever since.

Another one I started liking after seeing perform live (on tv, not in concert) was Glasvegas who I caught on The Graham Norton Show. Can't understand half the shit they say the first time around (Scottish), it sounds cool.

3. Drive-By Truckers.
Had heard of them, but had never heard them until I saw them in concert in 2002. Bought the album Southern Rock Opera at the next available opportunity.

6. Michelle Shocked
.
Had vaguely heard of her. Saw her perform at a community radio
convention and she blew me away.
.
Just her and her guitar.
.
Tracy Chapman, KINDA the same way. Had heard "Fast Car" and shortly
after she became known for that saw her perform solo at an Amnesty
International Concert. Everyone else had BIG LOUD ELECTRIC BANDS...
it was just her and her little wooden guitar and she blew EVERYBODY
away.
.
Not to mention when she and Peter Gabriel did an acoustic duet of
"Don't Give Up".

9. "Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet" and "Departure Lounge"
"Shadowy Men" opened for The Fleshtones, and while I was somewhat familiar with them for doing the theme and incidental music for the "Kids in the Hall" TV show, they were great live, and I bought all their music right after that.

"Tim Keegan and Departure Lounge" both opened for Robyn Hitchcock, then served as his backing band for a show, but honestly, I think they were a LOT better, at least that night. And their album "Out of Here" is just wonderful. A bit like Oasis, but if they were actually really good. Or Stone Roses without being quite so psychedelic. If you can find it, get it!

TIOB opened up for Maiden one year.

I saw Hatebreed at OzzFest the year that SOAD headlined.

Hadn't heard of either of those bands before seeing them, and I bought their CD's afterward based on those performances.

My brother dragged me to a concert they were headlining at the TLA in Philly on their tour supporting their "Summer in Abaddon" album and I was hooked immediately. We'd actually gone to see Aqueduct who was the opening act and well...sucks live because he does way too many covers and has horrible cheesy stage presence.

17. Alternated sets with an all-girl country band at the New Mexico State Fair in 1992
and thought they were awesomely talented besides being pretty damn cute... I thought they had a shot at hitting the big time, and kept wondering if I'd ever see them again, but considered myself a fan from that day on. Their name was the Dixie Chicks.

18. Alice Cooper, who I'd vaguely heard of, performed at my college's homecoming dance
in 1970.They'd already recorded Love it to Death, the album that made them stars, but had not yet released it. They were absolutely great, and especially for 1970, incredibly weird and bizarre, and performed ,as far as I can remember, the whole album, beginning with Sun Arise ( which I did, at the time , know was by Rolf Harris, and I thought that was a totally cool way to start the show). To this day, one the better bands I've ever seen, even if Alice/Vincent has become a repube, which I've heard; actually, that doesn't surprise me if true. ( Doesn't let him off the hook though; if he is, then fuck him--still a great band back then though).

:-) I attended the last concert ever held in my college's gym in 1971. Savoy Brown, Foghat and Badfinger. After that one, the administration said no more concerts in the gym.

27. Would've loved to have seen Savoy Brown back then
I don't think the administration had a problem with that homecoming "dance" ( which also included Chase, Frijid Pink and SRC;an odd, almost random collection of bands). Everyone was too stoned to trash the place and seems to me there were plenty of other concerts in the gym after that. ( Knox College in Galesburg, Ill.) You people must have been a lot more rowdy...

21. Burning Tree
Edited on Wed Feb-24-10 09:09 AM by RT Atlanta

Burning Tree opened for the Black Crowes in 1990 or early '91 when I saw them in Atlanta (Center Stage!) and they rocked the house - a great warm up for a great Crowes' show.

Here's the Amazon summary of their album:

http://www.amazon.com/Burning-Tree/dp/B0026CYDA8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1267020341&sr=8-2

This is from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_tree)

Burning Tree was a rock power trio from Los Angeles, California. The band performed from the late 1980s to 1990.

The band was officially started in 1987 by guitarist Marc Ford and drummer Doni Gray and were soon joined by bassist Mark 'Muddy' Dutton to complete the three piece but not before trying half a dozen bass players including Jay Bentley from Bad Religion. Doni Gray and Mark Dutton had already been playing the local L.A. scene in a band called The March and shortly after, Gray got together with Marc Ford and started a small buzz in L. A. and Orange County playing in a band called Citadel, so the synergy between the three was present from the very beginning.

The band secured a residency at the Coconut Teaszer in Hollywood (one of the better clubs to be seen playing in at the time) from 1988-89. By the end of that year they landed a recording contract with a major label (Epic Records).

The release of their self titled debut album was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and fans alike. However, for reasons that remain unknown, Burning Tree's destiny would not allow them to fulfill their contractual obligations and no further recordings followed.

Marc Ford joined the Black Crowes and is presently pursuing a solo career. Doni Gray recorded an album with Izzy Stradlin & The JuJu Hounds and later started God's Hotel with Spike Gray (London Quireboys) and Ted Hutt (Reacharound) and now has his own band Chromosapien. Mark 'Muddy' Dutton recorded and toured with Gilby Clarke in Col. Parker as well as with L. A. Guns. At present, Dutton has formed the group Up The Dose and has become quite an accomplished record producer.

None of the people I was with had ever heard of him, and when the curtain opened, there was this skinny kid with a guitar sitting on a stool all by himself in the middle of this big stage. Opened his mouth and started singing and blew everybody away.
