Fuck Saint Patrick, patron of drunk dickheads and shitstains. It's Feast of Joseph of Arimethea Day!
Seriously, March 17 is, in the Western tradition, the feast day of St. Joseph of Arimethea, a far better role model than some Irish snake flogger who's become the patron saint of American shitstains who think Irish food is corned beef and cabbage (it isn't, it's something the newly arrived Irish immigrants in America adopted from their Jewish neighbors) and that one best celebrates a saint by getting drunk, fighting, pissing in public, and making a damn food spectacle of yourself.

Just sayin'.

1. Can someone please explain to me...
why we don't have a Joseph of Arimethea Bowl game in the NCAA? We have the Orange Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, and the ExLax Bowl. Doesn't it make sense to also have a Joseph of Arimethea Bowl, in which the NCAA division I team with the largest number of Sanhedrin members plays the SEC champion? I've mentioned this many times to the BCS, but my logic is ignored.

Unless it's buried under Rosslyn Chapel, I think we're screwed.

2. Isn't Joseph of Arimathea on March 19?
I know, because there was an Italian restaurant owner in the Twin Cities named Giovanna D'Agostino who served free meals to the poor on March 19, St. Joseph's Day. After she died, her son continued the custom.

Edited on Tue Mar-16-10 10:16 PM by Lavender Brown
The Italian patron saint, St. Joseph, is Mary's husband, not Joseph of Arimathea.

My mom spent all day frying zeppole in preparation for St. Joseph's Day. :9

I've mentioned that to other Italian friends, and no one else has ever done that or heard of it. Is anyone here familiar with that tradition?

They were Sicilians, and if Mama wanted to pull your ear, you would let her pull your fuckin' ear.

Seriously, they were great people and Mama's food was incredible.

48. Cool! You're the first person who has ever heard of it.
My father's name was Joseph so he got a lot of ear pulling. Your friend's family was Sicilian? My father's family was too. But my mother's family wasn't Sicilian--they were from Southern Italy--and they did the ear pulling too! Yet you are the only other person I've mentioned this to who has heard of it. Though I suppose if there weren't any Josephs in the family, they may not know about it. You know I'll be continuing to ask other Italian friends about it because I'm incredibly curious about it. (I tried googling it once but didn't come up with anything.)

26. More of an analogy.
I don't really have the energy to fight about it. It has as much to do with 800 years of political oppression it has to do with religion. Enjoy your Wednesday.

I ought to point out that no one who suffered under or caused oppression during that 800 years is alive today.

34. Oops, sorry, didn't see that!
There's a long and storied history there. :) I'm a stone cold atheist Irish ex-Catholic and I still have strong feelings about the green. My analogy was awkward but I will flog it a bit more and say that there aren't any slavers alive today either but socially it would be frowned upon *today* to make a point of sporting a flag that symbolized oppression on a day of celebration for a culture that was oppressed by what that flag represents. That's all I was trying for there.

43. Hm-m. Interesting . . . Joseph of Arimathea has THREE feast days!!!1!!???
Veneration
Joseph of Arimathea is venerated as a saint by the Catholic, Lutheran, Eastern Orthodox and some Anglican churches. His feast-day is March 17 in the West, July 31 in the East. The Orthodox also commemorate him on the Sunday of the Myrrhbearers—the second Sunday after Pascha (Easter)—as well as on July 31. He appears in some early New Testament apocrypha, and a series of legends grew around him during the Middle Ages, which tied him to Britain and the Holy Grail. --- from Wikipedia
