Anti-Irish discrimination. I demand end to apostrophe denial
Today is the perfect day to start an End Irish Discrimination Campaign.

A lot of organizations (credit card companies, airlines, etc.) won't let me use the apostrophe in my last name.

But not all organizations. Just some.

So I never know if a reservation or store discount membership or item being held is under Patty O'D or Patty OD or Patty D (at college, I always had to go to the "D" line to pay the bursar, because I guess they though my middle initial was O).

Usually, I just say "can you by any chance look that up by phone number?"

One of life's minor but frequent annoyances is typing up a long initial login form online, and having it come back "you may only use letters in the last name field". Grrr.

Stop hatin' on those of us with ethnic last names!!!!!

1. Not as irritating, but seriously people,
if you want to ask if I'm related to a "Fitz-whatever," make sure the "whatever" part of the name matches mine. "Fitz" is the Irish corruption of the French word "Fils" & means "Son of." It's like asking someone named "Harrison" if they're related to another person named "Jackson."

2. As in "oh, Fitzsimmons - are you related to Fitzpatrick?"
Yikes.

Although, to be honest, the Irish can be just as clueless.

True Story: One of my girlfriends was spending a semester abroad, and spent part of a vacation hitchhiking around Ireland.

One of the boys who picked she and her friend up said "Oh, you're from the US, are you? Well, the three places there I've always wanted to go are Los Angeles, New York, and L.A."
