Can we get a list of Irish movies here? My children's definition of an Irish movie?
"Everyone dies". My children's definition of a funny Irish movie? "Some people die, but not everyone."

My (Partial) List:

Road to Perdition

Waking Ned Devine

Michael Collins

Wind that Shakes the Barley

The Informer

1. Wasn't the 'Road to Perdition' set in Chicago?
I know it was about Irish gangsters, but I wouldn't consider it an 'Irish' movie.

I love The Secret of Roan Inish!
I have it on DVD and watch it often. The seals and gulls, the people, the scenery, and last but certainly not least - the music. Wonderful.

Roger Ebert gave the movie a big thumbs up, and I was glad, because this movie deserves praise.

19. There was a home ec teacher in the junior high who used to
have the kids produce a family tree. I thought this was a bit nasty, since about half the kids here aren't living with both birth parents. Children 1-5 took a note in asking that that be excused from this assignment since " it wasn't the custom of my people to discuss such matters with outsiders."

She didn't get the hint, so child #6 took in a family tree complete with the Selkie on my father's side and the Firbolgs on my mother's!

21. How interesting!
I've read that there are people living today in the Orkney Islands who believe in selkies, and some say they are descended from one of more of them. I take it that the child was of Irish or Scottish descent...?

I will have to look up the word Firbolgs, because I have no idea what they are.

Snip from one Amazon review:

"This may be a Hallmark Hall of Fame feature made for television, but you wouldn't know it from the production values. This is a wonderfully done film, one of those old-fashioned romantic tearjerkers that will stay with you for a long time. It also contains some of the most breathtaking scenic shots of the Irish coastline you'll ever see.

Scott Glenn delivers a strong performance as always, while Saffron Burrows plays the part of the mythical woman/seal to absolute perfection. This is a film that can be watched over and over again without ever losing its emotional impact."

(1997) Not a highly rated film, but I enjoyed it for all the Irish music and scenery, and there was some comedy, Janeane Garofalo stars in it, and it's true that there is a matchmaking festival in Ireland. I enjoyed it.

.
... and then buried in 3 or 4 other suggestions.
.
"Circle of Friends" -- one of my favorites... a quiet little
movie.
.
Minnie Driver is hot.
.
"You mustn't mess me about. I know I may look like
a rhinoceros, but I've got quite a thin skin really."

.
Has some adult themes, but nothing real graphic, that I
remember.
