Which rock/folk songs make good lullabies?
I just had a baby, and I sing the same handful of songs to her over and over.

She probably doesn't care, but I'd like some variety.

I figure if it's a pop song, there's a chance I might already know the lyrics or will be able to memorize them pretty quickly.

Also, even if I already know it, I might have forgotten I know it from sleep deprivation.

Congratulations on the little one....

Never can start too soon to instill a social conscience in a little one.
Wish there was a way parents could have the accompanying video show a bit
across the nursery wall or whatever.

7. Congrats on the new baby girl!! My favourite by a long shot..
Annabelle: by Don Henley.

I watch you sleeping
My weary heart rises up on wings
I hear your laughter
Something deep down inside me sings

Way down here in the land of cotton
You were born on a rainy day
Since then, sweet things long forgotten
They just keep flooding back my way

Oh child, I cannot tell you how the time just flies
But I have had my days of glory under sunny skies
These days, your bright dreams are all I want to see
Sleep tight, annabel
You can always count on me

In this cold world, folks will judge you
Though they don??t know you at all
And I may not be there to catch you
Anytime that you might fall

But, you got my hard head
And your mother??s grace
All the likeness of the loved ones right there in your face
And I know in the end you??ll be who you will be

So sleep tight, annabel
You can always count on me

8. This is the one I would LOVE to sing to a child...
.
...ESPECIALLY to a child who has a sad... whatever age.
.
.
Rickie Lee Jones' "Rainbow Sleeves" (written by Tom Waits)
...(I change the word 'whiskey' to 'whimsey')
.
Maybe my favorite of all my favorites of her work ("Girl
at her Volcano" is probably my favorite of her albums).
.
.
.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKMGH1Xhtc0
.
You used to dream yourself away each night
To places that you'd never been
On wings made of wishes
That you whispered to yourself
Back when every night the moon and you
Would sweep away to places
That you knew
Where you would never get the blues

Well now, *whimsey* gives you wings
To carry
Each one of your dreams
And the moon does not belong to you
But I believe
That your heart keeps young dreams
Well, I've been told
To keep from ever growing old
And a heart that has been broken
Will be stronger when it mends

Don't let the blues stop you singing
Darling, you've only got a broken wing
Hey, you just hang on to my rainbow
Hang on to my rainbow
Hang on to my rainbow sleeves

.

Not a lullaby but a fun song for kids and parents alike.

It's a classic and has been covered many times. Seek out Dylan's version especially - http://www.bobdylan.com/#/songs/froggie-went-courtin

EDIT: Congratulations on the new addition to your family. Mine just turned 14 two weeks ago and I can't believe it. There's no greater gift than a child. Enjoy!

Never Too Late For Love - Three Days Grace
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL2ZwXj1tXM

This world will never be
What I expected
And if I don't belong
Who would have guessed it
I will not leave alone
Everything that I own
To make you feel like it's not too late
It's never too late

Even if I say
It'll be alright
Still I hear you say
You want to end your life
Now and again we try
To just stay alive
Maybe we'll turn it all around
'Cause it's not too late
It's never too late

No one will ever see
This side reflected
And if there's something wrong
Who would have guessed it
And I have left alone
Everything that I own
To make you feel like
It's not too late
It's never too late

Even if I say
It'll be alright
Still I hear you say
You want to end your life
Now and again we try
To just stay alive
Maybe we'll turn it all around
'Cause it's not too late
It's never too late

The world we knew
Won't come back
The time we've lost
Can't get back
The life we had
Won't be ours again

This world will never be
What I expected
And if I don't belong

Even if I say
It'll be alright
Still I hear you say
You want to end your life
Now and again we try
To just stay alive
Maybe we'll turn it all around
'Cause it's not too late
It's never too late
Maybe we'll turn it all around
'Cause it's not too late
It's never too late (It's never too late)
It's not too late
It's never too late

NO ONE LIKE YOU (John Denver)

I like your eyes.
I like your nose.
I like your mouth.
Your ears, your hands, your toes.

I like you face.
It's really you.
I like the things you say and do.
There's not a single soul
Who sees the skies
The way you see them.
Through your eyes.
And aren't you glad.
You should be glad.
There's no one, no one
Exactly like you.

Oooh, little sleepy boy,
do you know what time it is?
Well, the hour of your bedtime's long been past.
And though I know you're fightin' it,
I can tell when you rub your eyes
that you're fadin' fast.
Fadin' fast.

Won't you run come see St. Judy's Comet
roll across the skies,
and leave a spray of diamonds in its wake.
I long to see St. Judy's comet sparkle in your eyes when you awake.
Oh, when you wake, awake...

52. Here is a Paul Simon song for his daughter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhT0Pydv4JQ

Father and Daughter
If you ever leap awake
In the mirror of a bad dream
And for a fraction of a second
You can't remember where you are
Just open your window
And follow your memory upstream
To the meadow in the mountain
Where we counted every falling star

I believe the light that shines on you
Will shine on you forever
And though I can't guarantee
There's nothing scary hiding under your bed
I’m gonna stand guard
Like a postcard of a Golden Retriever
And never leave till I leave you
With a sweet dream in your head

I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
That loved his daughter more than I love you

Trust your intuition
It's just like going fishing
You cast your line
And hope you'll get a bite
But you don't need to waste your time
Worrying about the market place
Try to help the human race
Struggling to survive its harshest night

I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
That loved his daughter more than I love you

I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
That loved his daughter more than I love you

35. The best song for a dad to sing to his little girl, in my opinion,
is I Will Take You Home - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZjDxo-AISo

Little girl lost
In a forest of dreams.
It's a dark old wood
And it's damp with dew.
Hoot owl hoots
For a moment it seems
Something big and cold
Just got ahold of you.
Just when everything gets scary,
Daddy's come 'round for his darlin' again.
Hold my hand with your little fingers.
Daddy's loving arms gonna gather you in.

Ain't no way the Bogeyman can get you,
You can close your eyes, the world is gonna let you,
Your daddy's here and never will forget you,
I will take you home.
I will take you home.
Gonna carry you back home
In my arms.
I will take you home.

Long is the road
We must travel on down.
Short are the legs
That will struggle behind.
I wish I knew for sure
Just where we're bound,
What we will be doin'
And what we're gonna find.
Wherever we go, there will be birds to cheer you
Flower to color in the fields around.
Wherever we go, I'll be right here near you
You can't get lost when you're always found.

Ain't no fog that's thick enough to hide you
Your daddy's gonna be right here beside you
If your fears should start to get inside you
I will take you home.
I will take you home.
Gonna carry you back home
In my arms.
I will take you home.

Sun
part the dark and chase it gone
you're the sweet and sunny one
as bright as any star tonight.
You smile like a beam of light
you can
show me a ray
show me a ray
show me a ray
show me a ray of
Sun.
Just until the morning comes
I'm the gray and cloudy one
Raining for so long, so long
Like a candle blowing in a storm
but you can
Show me a ray
Show me a ray
Show me a ray
Show me a ray
of
Sun.

Edited on Mon May-17-10 10:20 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
Only Billy & Co. could end a double disk album with a lullabye and not have it come off sounding cheesy or pretentious.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPBg7_M4gwA

goodnight, to every little hour that you sleep tight
may it hold you through the winter of a long night
and keep you from the loneliness of yourself
heart strung is your heart frayed and empty
cause it's hard luck, when no one understands your love
it's unsung, and i say
goodnight, my love, to every hour in every day
goodnight, always, to all that's in your heart
goodnight, may your dreams be so happy and your
head lite with the wishes of a sandman and a night light
be careful not to let the bedbugs sleep tight nestled in your covers
the sun shines but i don't
a silver rain will wash away
and you can tell, it's just as well
goodnight, my love, to every hour in every day
goodnight, always to all that's pure that's in your heart

Such a great song on such a great album. I want it played at my funeral.

51. Two suggestions:
For a girl, Robin Trower's Little Girl.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr5fH32fWR4

For anyone (ideally, a grown-up girl), Bob Dylan's I'll Be Your Baby Tonight. I can't find a youtube of Dylan's version; here's Norah Jones with a (lesser) cover.

I used to sing Bye Bye Blackbird to my little DS1 when he was a nipper, Cocker's version comes close to mine!

That last one is less "singable." Might be better for a softy-played stereo in the newspaper.

71. No, "Merman," like "He's a merman/He doesn't need your voice..."
It's about self-esteem.

60. Take Me Home, Country Roads--John Denver

My daughter loves that song. She's 6 now & still loves for me to sing it to her.

Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains growin' like a breeze.

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads.

All my mem'ries gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye.

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads.

I hear her voice in the mornin' hours, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
And drivin' down the road I get a feelin'
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday.

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads.

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
Take me home (down) country roads
Take me home (down) country roads.

61. If you've never heard this, it's one of the most mellow songs I've ever heard
"Til The Dreaming's Done" by Bruce Hornsby on his Songs From The Southside album.

Almost 20 years ago, as a dear friend of our was dying of cancer at age 36, I put together a tape of songs like that to
help her calm down and pass the time waiting for the inevitable, and this was one of her favorites.
