Is there any way to share electronic books?
I have one downloaded on my ipad and someone wanted to read it but as far as I know there is no way to do that. Right?

1. downloaded from where?
The free app offers things like eight different fonts, customizable line spacing and margins, different font sizes, and themes. You get two book views, one showing covers the other showing covers plus details on the book.

You can lend books to friends (a nice touch you should be able to do with your own legally-purchased digital music really, eh, labels?) You can also sync between devices, set bookmarks, conduct in-book searches. The Nook for iPad also supports the ePub formats.

3. Borders doesn't support loaning
Can I give an eBook as a gift, or lend one to a friend?

Not at this time. You can send a Borders gift card to your friend to purchase eBooks. You can also send friends and family emails right from our title detail pages, recommending they check out one of the books at Borders.com.

4. Part of the idea of ebook readers is to prevent lending. (nt)

5. It depends
If the book is public domain, you may be able to, but if it's public domain there would be no need to do this.

I know that Kindle books can be shared between a person's own Kindle reader and their own iPhone/iTouch, but you can't share with a different account. I'm not sure how the iPad fits into that mix.

The B&N Nook is advertised as the only commercial ebook reader that supports loaning:

I checked around and almost bought a Nook just for this feature, but I wound up pre-ordering one of the new Kindles instead.
