Inception is The Matrix done right
Take the Matrix.

Add a sympathetic protagonist.

Expunge gun n' leather fetishism.

Place as much emphasis on the psychological as the philosophical.

Voila! You have Inception.

1. Just so long
as they don't do like The Matrix and diminish the original with bad sequels.

3. I would have to disagree with that for the most part. If anything it was more like "The Cell"
Yes there are similarities between the two especially when you were 'plugging' into another level of reality.

But Matrix was about plugging into a computer generated society where humans were reduced to being batteries for the computers that were controlling the planet.

Inception was more about espionage. If anything, I think it was more like that movie "The Cell" with Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Lopez although 100000% better written and acted. It was about the concept that one could enter into the dreams of another person to extract information whether it's the mind of a child or serial killer (The Cell) or a mental style of espionage. I think our subconscious is one of the last explored frontiers and holds the keys to so many of our RL quirks.

4. You found Cobb to be sympathetic?
I was actively rooting against him by the end of the movie.

He intentionally planted an idea in his "beloved" wife's head that made her kill herself. He didn't deserve any redemption or forgiveness as far as I was concerned.

5. I didn't find the protagonist sympathetic at all.

Maybe I'm just getting sick of DiCaprio having permastubble and overwrought angst, but he came off as a total douche. Hell, I had more sympathy for Kratos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_War_III

I also found exchanging leather fetishism for remaking On Her Majesty's Secret Service irritating at best. Inception was certainly no Dark City.

6. Both good movies, but quite different
The Matrix was an action movie set in a post-apocalyptic world where the computers have taken over and everybody is living a dream connected to The Matrix in order to power the computers.

Inception was a corporate espionage thriller with strong sci-fi elements where people enter a dream world.

DiCaprio is certainly a better actor than Keanu Reeves. However, Reeves usually knows his limitations and picked a role that was perfect for his limited range in Neo. (Sort of like Arnold being perfect for Terminator and T2) I think the character of Trinity was better than Ellen Page's character as well.
