Need Help Naming a Country Estate for a Story
It's summer, hot and humid, and I am spending a lot of my time inside. Thought I would start writing a story I had started a while back. I need a name of a house and was hoping someone here might have some unique suggestions. The house is a Manor. I was thinking of Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford's estate, 'Pickfair'or Rudolph Valentino's estate which was named "Falcon's Lair". Michale Jackson's place was called 'Neverland Ranch' and George Lucas's estate is called 'Skywalker Ranch'.

This is a country estate in Connecticut and I want it to sound like someplace you would want to stay for a weekend. Any suggestions?

2. I took a look at some Connecticut town and city names
and found a couple that I thought sounded good when linked to Manor:

Byram
Easton
Round Hill
Barkhamstead
Colebrook
Haddam
Winstead
Brandford
Wallingford
Talcott
Kilingly
Northford

Have fun.

43. Its
Its a Murder mystery.Cross between The Last of Sheila and The Honey Pot.Delves into the Broadway world(theatre agents, producers, stage actors, critics, etc.)About 3/4's of the film takes place in this country home in Connecticut and it's all of them trying to figure out who the murderer is.I have characters but no names as of yet. I like alot of the suggestions, although I am trying to eliminate the Manor after the name if possible.I'm looking into European names because of it being New England and I figure some people may not have heard of some of the names that are more common in Europe.I'm asking friends the same question in this thread. Gonna get a list and then narrow it down. Wellington Place and Ambers Lair are two I sort of like. Thanks again for the ideas!

51. There is a
Street near me Catswamp Rd. I always wonder who owned the property and originally had naming rights to the new road? But you have to admit it has its subtle charms. :)

No real suggestion except that you are on the right path dropping manor from the name. Think of Brideshead Revisited where the estate is always referred to as Brideshead. Or any of the Jane Austin novels where the houses/properties are described as manors or estates and then referred to by just the name. The media called Mj's house Neverland Ranch but I'm sure he referred to it as just Neverland.

Mitt Romney Is Driving a Pickup Truck to Fundraisers Now

Mitt Romney, who sleeps in a blue blazer, red power-tie and khaki slacks, drove his ol' pickup truck to a New Hampshire fundraiser yesterday. Will this "proletarian-car" populist approach help him, as it did Sen. Scott Brown? Unlikely.

Lisa wears jewelry, heels, and expensive dresses, although she did dress down for tasks outside of the house."

52. My parents went with "Sandy Bog Mountain"
My grandparents left my mom several acres of land and a farmhouse on top of a mountain in the lower Berkshires of Connecticut.

No lie. I feel the need to say that as this story gets absurd quickly. When they were building, because it was such a large addition that it was basically new construction, they had to get a site inspection. Mind you, there has been a house on this site for 60 years at this point. So, they discovered that the septic system was shot. So the health inspector comes out and says "You can't have a leach field, the soil is too sandy. So, because they don't want to have to put in a cistern that will have to be emptied yearly or thereabouts, they seek a second opinion. Second guy comes out, does his tests comes back to the house. Says "You cant have a leach field." My parents says they know, too sandy. He says "Sand? You haven't got no sand. What you've got is wetlands, a bog sitting on top of clay substrate. It won't leach and the first time it rains you're going to pollute the water table for miles." So...they relent. They hire the contractor to come out and dig the cistern for the system. He gets the backhoe out there, starts digging the hole and says "I don't know why you went with the cistern, you've got beautiful drainage."

My mother storms to the house, calls the health inspector and says she's putting in the leach field and he can come arrest her if he wants. About a month later, the guy shows up with his probe. sticks it in the turf, takes his reading, makes a face, moves about 40 feet and takes another. Now he's visibly pissed-off storms to the center of the yard, right on top of the illegal leech field and probes. Still gets a contamination-free reading and storms off, Last time we saw the guy. That as five years ago.

My parents bought a brass plaque for the front yard, reads "Sandy Bog Mountain" and the street address. There is of-course neither sand or a bog.

Was the name of a book by Beverley Nichols. Nichols was a prolific writer and lived in and wrote about many estates in England. Here's a link to a site about him and there's also a wikipedia entry.

I'd say to peruse his works for interesting ideas.
