I could see the white spots on her back really clearly. Anyone ever hit an animal that big? What would have happened to both of us?

1. Hitting a deer can be very bad for everyone concerned.
Edited on Sat Aug-07-10 08:44 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
Some info here: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/car-deer-collisions-in-the-united-states.html

There are a lot of deer in my area, including near where I work. One thing I've learned is that if you see one deer, slow down and be very careful because there will almost always be more. They seldom wander around by themselves. A collision with a deer can do a lot of damage to your car (and to the deer), and sometimes the accident is fatal to the human as well as the deer. Be really careful in rural areas, especially at night.

2. Yes it was on a woodsy parkway that I often drive on at night. I'll be much more careful.

5. It is a big problem. Particularly in MI and PA and elsewhere where
the deer population is way up. Fewer hunters today, I guess.
Many have died in a car, truck or motorcycle. The car, truck or motorcycle may be destroyed. Check out You Tube. You will see many many motorcycle hits deer videos.

7. Yes. A doe. A year and a half ago.
The thing is, she didn't RUN in front of me. An eyewitness (the driver behind me)saw her jump over a bunch of shrubs - which explains how, from how I saw it, she appeared to fall out of the sky. She jumped high over the shrubs and fell in front of me. I was going 45mph - and obviously, I had zero warning.

It totaled the Jeep - and she died a short time after the impact. Every time I drive down that road, I think about it. Something obviously spooked her, but there was no way for me to know she was headed my way.

8. I've always wondered if you can take it home to eat if you hit it
I mean, not if you hit it on purpose, but if it's an accident, shouldn't someone at least be able to take the carcass home to be butchered? Seems like such a waste if not.

9. Here you can do that.
A guy hit a deer in front of our house. He was on a motorcycle and broke his leg. He was going to be in the hospital for a while.

We claimed the deer after all the excitement died down. The cop told us that it would be discarded by the highway cleanup crew if it was not claimed right away.

10. Yikes! I live in a pretty rural area and saw a deer standing by the road the other night.
It was quite beautiful, but also very close. I make a point of looking for animals at night, but after seeing the deer, I've been even more careful. You are very fortunate. So is the deer... :scared:

11. I've noticed lots of deer on the roads this summer. I've wondered
if they've been forced to leave their safer habitats because it's been so dry and they are looking for water. I have also seen them during the day more often than I used to. I had a close call with a moose on a highway up here a few years ago. If I had hit him he would have been through the windshield and in my lap.

Edited on Sun Aug-08-10 06:44 AM by mnhtnbb
We live right in town but have a lot of woods. We see deer all the time, and frequently
they travel in a group. I saw one of these does first; later the second doe appeared and finally
the buck came out of the woods.

You really need to be careful driving through wooded areas.

17. OMG, I had that happen with a hawk. It was chasing a rabbit. I was going around
a curve by a cliff, the rabbit went under my car, the hawk hit the post between the windshield and the door, almost came in the window. Talk about freak out!!!!!! This was years ago, thanks for the memories:scared: lol

18. The closest I've come is similar. Going around a curve and it jumped out of a cornfield.
All I saw were hooves above the passenger side windshield. It made a beautiful move though, it turned in mid-air and never hit my car. I was on a fast curve, 50 mph. That may have had a lot to do with it missing my car too.

19. You Were Lucky There Was Only One Animal.

Deer generally travel in herds; if one darts across the road in front of you, there are usually a few more in the process of doing the same.

I'm glad you and the deer escaped without injury.

22. My daughter got hit by a deer a couple years ago.
It wasn't very old. It ran smack into the side of her vehicle, in the area at the bottom of the passenger door. Left a small deer head dent and a lot of deer fur at the front of the rear wheel well. Luckily it didn't go under the car. She thought it was dead, it was laying in the road. Must have knocked it out but it got up and took off before the deputies arrived. Similar accident happened with my DIL years ago. IIRC, she got smacked on the passenger side by 2 deer. She had extensive damage to the side of her car.

I've only had close calls. Thank goodness.

front of them, and there was no time to stop. The animal died. The incident was very traumatic and they felt awful. Their car had extensive damage to the front and hood, but I think the damage to their psyches was worse.
