meem was pronunciation.

Although I first heard that word a few years ago, so think it is probably a new word.

7. a meme is a concept or idea which spreads virally through a population
for instance, the LOLcat thing is a meme. It started as a joke that caught on and evolved (or devolved depending on your opinion of LOLcats). Fashion, art, or music styles could be considered to be memes in their broadest form, as could philosophies.

13. A meme is an idea that can be transmitted..
Edited on Sun Aug-08-10 01:25 PM by MicaelS
Through a population, and undergo change (mutations) while doing so. It is the cultural equivalent of a gene. It rhymes with "cream."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme

A meme is a unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes, in that they self-replicate and respond to selective pressures.

The British scientist Richard Dawkins coined the word "meme" in The Selfish Gene (1976) as a concept for discussion of evolutionary principles in explaining the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena. Examples of memes given in the book included melodies, catch-phrases, beliefs (notably religious beliefs), clothing fashion, and the technology of building arches.

Meme-theorists contend that memes evolve by natural selection (in a manner analogous to that of biological evolution) through the processes of variation, mutation, competition, and inheritance influencing an individual meme's reproductive success. Memes spread through the behaviors that they generate in their hosts. Memes that propagate less prolifically may become extinct, while others may survive, spread, and (for better or for worse) mutate. Theorists point out that memes which replicate the most effectively spread best, and some memes may replicate effectively even when they prove detrimental to the welfare of their hosts.

14. nice link (the second one) - that was interesting to read.
It always surprises me when people think that memes are some kind of newfangled internet thing. I first learned of the the word and concept when I was a kid in the 80s, and it made perfect sense to me then.

I first learned about memes while reading Analog Science Fiction magazine. Made perfect sense to me.

The meme that really jumped out at me was Conspiracy Theories. I thought those really are memes, a better example couldn't be found.

17. Referring to things as memes is a meme.
99.99% of the time, "meme" is used in place of a more common-place word because it sounds cool. That may be a meme, too... :)
