Had an AWESOME day in a Chinese fishing village... (pics)
Edited on Mon Aug-09-10 09:37 AM by HEyHEY
So, I'm writing a book on Qingdao, a coffee table type thing for extra money. So I go to this little Village in Southern Shandong Province today. It was great, my fixer arranged for these old fishers to come meet me. The guy second from the right is 88! Could you imagine the shit these guys have seen? Japanese occupation, civil war... wow. They were great. PS: Pro photograhpers, I'm a proffesional writer, not photographer, and can take a decent news photo when I need too, but these aren't up to par professionally. Forgive me! Wish I hd one of you with me today!

Young guys practicing their net throwing technique

Some guy working on his boat

Uh...boats

One boat!

The pic that got away! Sadly, the man isn't in focus, woulda been good in the book. I also missed when he waved at me.

3. Great pics - my wife was just in Qingdao last week
That was for her work, though. I think she's going to the World's Fair/Expo or whatever it is in Shanghai tomorrow.

And, my wife's best friend just arrived in China (also for work) and is headed to Qingdao in a few days. But, she is also from Shandong Province, originally.

At least the weather seems a bit cooler there than in Shanghai & Nanjing.

are Chinese, so kind of specialize in doing business with China... though, her friend has traveled all over the world (she had posted pics from Moscow a few months ago on her FB page), and my wife had also worked with other countries, too.

9. Yeah, I was shocked at how cool it is here compared to Beijing
Your wife like Qingdao? I love it, it is a beautiful city. Not usual for modern China, in my experience.

13. I'm pretty sure she likes it.
I've never been to Qingdao, and after my last trip to China (August 2007), I said I'm not going again in the summer. The heat, humidity & pollution combined makes Florida in the summer seem pleasant.

17. GREAT pictures, HEyHEY!!!!
.
.
.
.
Perhaps the most interesting people I've ever met in my life were the watermen
of the Chesapeake Bay, with whom I worked on Clean Water issues.
.
.
MANY of them had stopped formal schooling in grade school to start working on
Dad's boat, but they were some of the most well-read, well-spoken, bright people
I've ever known.
.
.
They were formidable speakers at public meetings on water issues.
.
.
It was an honor to work with them -- and utterly fucking fascinating.

21. Who the FUCK do you think you are?
Edited on Tue Aug-10-10 07:35 AM by HEyHEY
Any idea about me? Why I'm in China? Any of that? Apple class? I put myself through school and worked my ass off to get a job at the CBC as a reporter and was eventually a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail, things were going well, then the economic crisis hit. (Thanks to YOUR fucking country BTW).
I knew I wouldn't surive CBC's impending cuts and freelance print work was going to go. My hours at CBC were cut back, and I had to move in with my parents. I decided the best course of action was to go and work in China, I would get a paycheque, see a bit of the world and learn a third language to boost my skill set so that I'd never be in this situation again.

I moved to China to host a radio program on English radio for about 1,500 USD a month. Which doesn't go far in China when you have student loans to pay in Canada. After my one year was up at the radio station I signed on with a startup indie news organization that was a sham and didn't work out, I was fired cause some head up guy "didn't like the look of me" (welcome to Asia).

So, after four months of unemployment except freelance english tutoring, some voicing gigs and borrowing about $1,000 off my GF I, by the skin of my teeth, got a job copy editing at the last minute that provided a visa to stay - good news considering I couldn't afford airfare to Canada and had literally $150 USD to my name. I got that gig and start, then a woman I applied for a job with months earlier called me with a contract to write a book on Qingdao for a series called cities in China... it's about three months work and pays about $4,500 USD.

I took the gig because I owe so much money and I want to pay it off quickly. i'm still living on about 1,200 USD as I pay off debt, rent and such.

What the fuck have you been doing besides sitting on your parents couch and complaing about the lot life handed you?

26. What kind of stupid crybaby crap are you spouting?
Are you really trying to say, that since other people have a hard time finding a job, he should put on sackcloth and ashes and mope about the world, regardless of what his situation is? Are you really trying to claim that he's hiring illegal immigrants to put citizens out of work, just because he had a good day? You are a first class jackass.

It's called research. It's what people do who have a desire to publish something that might be of interest to others.
