Does anyone 'get' this?
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 10:22 PM by babylonsister
I'm thinking of signing on to 'plenty of fish', a dating site, to meet people. I signed up once and chickened out after about 2 days. Putting in 'unabashed liberal' didn't help in GA. :eyes: You apparently have to put your age up there. So is this too corny?

Call54,whereareyou?

Do you get it, or am I a dweeb?

3. I don't even get this.
I was married for a long time, recently divorced, and asking for advice. You obviously weren't capable of helping me.

6. Sorry for your troubles. However,
"ooh, ooh" was a catch phrase by Toody from the show (assuming that was your reference). It even spawned this novelty song.

The only tip I can give you is, personality always trumps pop references. Good luck.

12. Gosh. Was Toody on the show?
I have no clue other than remembering, 'Car 54, Where Are You?'

I figured it might be fun and might do it before I turn 55. It wouldn't work then.

4. I was on that site for awhile
Not much luck though... :nopity: Either I'm ugly or boring, or who knows what? I actually meet more people through meetup.com, even though it's not a dating site, it's more fun to go do stuff with people who share your interests, and I think there's a better chance of maybe meeting someone special. But who knows? Give plentyoffish a shot, what's the worst that could happen?

5. Thanks. I never heard of meetup.com, so you've advanced my
really weird idea of perhaps meeting people online.

This is all new to me, so I'm open to anything or any ideas, but won't tolerate assholes. I just divorced one.

7. Yep, I'm divorced too
Maybe I'm too picky now, I don't know? But I'm pretty happy in general, so I'm pretty far from desperate. Just enjoying the freedoms of being single again...it's fun!

Here's an example of a hiking meetup group I'm part of, I hadn't met any of these people before we climbed a mountain together, and we had a blast! I made friends with a bunch of cool people :) I'm the guy in the green shirt, on the left:

Doesn't that look like fun?? :)

but unless I am missing something, I think it is Car 54, not Call 54.

i would be more concerned with explaining what you are about. Best of luck.

14. I remember reading an article about the guy that runs that website
It's a money machine. The guy says he works between ten minutes and one hour a day, and takes home over five million dollars a year.

15. I found POF to be a poorly constructed and very confusing and not user-friendly site
just my 2 cents...Although I haven't really had much better luck on other sites, but that's because my shyness is so extreme that I almost never contact any women, even ones that appear intelligent, interesting and reasonably attractive (I know; last part is shallow of me, but I need to see some amount of being physically attracted beyond the deeper stuff). But again POF was a site that I found very confusing to use. As far as "call54", yeah, I'm old enough to get it (loved that show) , but it does have a certain dweebish cachet to it, IMO. On the other hand dweebish can be endearing to some men. Good luck.

18. Yes, but the main selling point is
it's free, which is appealing. Do you know of other sites that are also free that are better? I'm not willing to throw money at this.

As for shyness, despite my big mouth on DU, I can be fairly shy, too, so don't know if this will ever work for me. But I might try it because I really would love to meet some people around here.

And dweebish can be good; gotcha and thanks! :D

Good luck to you, too.

21. I'm on a different free one
called OKcupid--which is also sort of weird in a way but seemed easier ti figure out than POF. By the way, I have a friend who uses POF (he's been single since being dumped about a year ago) and he's found that he's met some nice women there, so I guess that considering that it's free, you got nothing to lose by using either of those.

16. Here's why I think divorced older women end up alone so much of the time:
The dirty little secret.....we LIKE being alone, we've learned to enjoy our own company and we want life on our own terms without having to put our needs aside for other people.

I got divorced at 40 (I'm now 55) and although I've dated a lot I have no interest in taking on another permanent person in my home or my life. I'm not half as afraid of "growing old alone" than I am of staying in a boring relationship and giving up my goals and aspirations just cuz I'm SCARED of growing old alone.

The statiticians just assume chicks like us can't find a new husband. They never "get" that we might not be looking for one!

17. Google "democratic singles"
There are a number of dating sites specifically for dems.

I wound up in Atlanta because of a man I met online. Okay, it only lasted a little over a year, but honestly, it was the best year of my life & I have no regrets.

Also, there's a Drinking Liberally group in Atlanta, although I've never gone to it. Seems like that would also be a good way to meet people.
