Is this a dick move?
Edited on Thu Aug-19-10 12:27 PM by MilesColtrane
This couple I know is moving out of state after retiring.

So, I get an email invitation to a 'Going Away Party' at a local restaurant.

They are the ones organizing the party.

The email explicitly states that this is a "dutch" event, so bring your wallet.

This guy is barely an acquaintance, and he has always been a little, annoying, passive-aggressive twit.

Am I out of line in thinking that if you throw a party for yourself, the least you can do is pay for it?

(I'm not going, by the way.)

2. They did put "no gifts please" in small fonts at the bottom.
I'll give them that, but still...

5. I absolutely hate parties like that!!
If you can't throw a party and provide food and drinks for your guests, than don't throw a fucking party!

6. it's tacky but if they paid, you'd be obliged to give a gift
as far as your wallet's concerned, the difference is negligible.

but on the other hand, if the invite is to come along and pay for your own meal...

and the person is tacky and it doesn't sound like you'll miss him

you simply should go and buy a meal somewhere you'd rather be. :D

7. it's tacky, but not a dick move...
now if the invite failed to say it was a dutch event and you didn't find out until the check arrived, then that would be a dick move.

I knew someone who would invite friends to a restaurant to celebrate her birthday and then expect everyone to pick up her portion of it because it was her birthday. She would also complain when people didn't go even if it was because they explained to her that they couldn't afford it. I'm so glad I no longer deal with her anymore.

11. I once had a friend who stopped by and asked if i wanted a mcdonalds
I said, "sure." and we took off.

When we ordered and got to the window, she turned to me and asked for my share of the bill.

That REALLY pissed me off! Whenever I invite someone to do something that costs money, I am always ready for them to be my guest and I pick up the tab. If we are going dutch like at a bar or something. I get that out right away.

8. It's like that old joke...
...the person who goes on and on and on about themselves, without showing any interest in the other person, then they finally say "Well, enough of that...what do YOU like most about me?"

This couple's decision to throw a "dutch" gathering in their own honor speaks volumes. A dick move? Absolutely. You not going? Smart move.

:toast:

10. if my friends have a party at a restaurant, there's no talk of who will pay
we all pay for ourselves, and if it's someone's birthday, we'll collectively cover him or her.
