Paul just took Bailey to the emergency vet
When we woke up he came out and threw up a little and pooped in the house (something he has never done before). Then he fell over and was having problems breathing.

He walked out to the car under his own power, albeit with some nudging.

I sure hope my boy is OK.

2. Nothing that I find...
We were in the bedroom. There's nothing in there and from there he went right outside. Not sure what he could have gotten into. (Not saying it isn't possible, of course.)

4. I looked up Bailey's photo -
Now I can visualise his sweet beagle-lab face and send get well vibes to him.

I was just reading about how dogs can get intestinal worms from raccoons if raccoons drink from an outside water bowl. I was wondering if my dog could get salmonella from the jays bathing in her outsde water bowl.

I hope the doc can diagnose the cause of his symptoms and help him get better asap!

5. Update
They took him in right away. He had diarrhea with blood in it. They said they would need to take him to the hospital and it would cost 1 - 2 thousand dollars.

6. And they're going to keep him at least overnight.
They're giving him fluids right now. They do not currently know what's wrong with him yet. I'm...nervous.

8. Emergency vets are super expensive
but in my experiences they provided good care and saved my pet.

I hope Bailey's okay.

10. Pancreatitis?
Our big dog, Stella, had a bout of that with similar symptoms. Scared the bejeezus out of us. She recovered and is doing well. Sending good vibes for the best possible outcome!

11. Almost 8 hours later...
They said they wanted to do an ultrasound as the liquids they were pushing didn't do anything.

15. 8/22/10 update
I called the vet this morning at 3:15 while I was doing my walk. The doctor I spoke with said that he was resting comfortably. She said that he still had diarrhea with blood in it. When I asked her if they had figured out what happened she said it was likely they'd never know for sure. She said he was responsive when they walked in the room.

Then she dropped the bombshell.

She said she was glad we brought him in immediately. She said that if we hadn't he likely would have bled to death internally.

I want to thank you all for the vibes. :-)

19. I am glad Bailey is okay!
:loveya:

I'm sorry it was such a scary ordeal, and I'm sorry it was so damned expensive. :(

But I'm glad you were able to keep him alive, and I hope this never, ever happens again. Love and best wishes for Bailey!

We have pretty much come to the conclusion that the only reason I keep my credit card is to cover sudden vet bills for the dogs. It has added up to quite a bit of money. But what would any of us do if we couldn't cover sudden vet care? :(
