2. First time I have heard the words Milwaukee and vacation in the same sentence....
But if you are seeing the Brew Crew beat the Dodgers then I am all for it.

6. Solly's Grille.
4629 North Port Washington Road.

Some of the best butter burgers you'll ever have. It might sound a little gross, but with cheese and onions, they're about as good as it gets. If you're feeling really adventurous, give the Cheesehead a try.

7. Did they move the airport and not tell me?
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 01:10 PM by Jeff In Milwaukee
Solly's is in Glendale.

The pickings around the airport are mighty slim. There's a Jalapeno Loco, where I've never eaten, but people whose palates I trust says it's pretty good - but obviously not what you're looking for.

Other than that, it's mostly fast food and a number of hotel-based restaurants of dubious quality.

There's a good hot dog stand called Martino's on Layton Ave about 2-3 miles from the airport. Go any farther than that, and your options begin to really multiply.

8. I was just thinking of Milwaukee in general.
I used to live in Lake Mills, about midway between Milwaukee and Madison. There were basically three things I'd go to Milwaukee for, Summerfest, the Eagles Bar and Grill and Solly's. Can't say I'm very familiar with the city beyond those, though.

9. If you're only coming for three things....
those would be the three to come for! Although you might want to add Sobelman's to your list -- good burgers and it's reasonably near the Marquette campus (on the way to Eagles and Summerfest).

17. I'll have to check out Sobelman's on my next trip up.
I'll probably be heading there late June next year.

10. Jeff, we'll be driving from Milwaukee to twenty miles north of Chicago
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 06:42 PM by Skittles
(note: you do realize I used to be a FIB, right? :D) - how about something on the way out from the airport - could be a few miles but not much more because we will be hungry by then; thanks

My Cheesehead coworker has suggested "Beer Belly" on Layton.

11. I grew up in Illinois...
But in the rural, downstate area. When Cheeseheads talk about FIBs, they're usually referring to people from Chicago. I totaly sympathize with them -- my hometown was on the Mississippi River, and we had our share of really annoying tourists, as well.

About 50 miles south of the airport (between Racine and Kenosha) is Mars Cheese Castle. The food there isn't spectacular, but if you're in Wisconsin, how can you miss eating at a place with a name like that? The Castle is preparing to move into new quarters because of an I-94 widening project, but I think they're still in the old place for right now.

A little farther down the road in Kenosha is Frank's Diner. I haven't been there yet, but it's on my culinary bucket list. It's a classic diner (actually featured on "Diners Drive-in and Dives" on Food Network) and their "Garbage Plates" are legendary. Remember: They're only open until about 2:00 p.m.

If you're in a hurry, there's a cluster of fast food at the intersection of I-94 and Route 50 outside Kenosha. The area features the only White Castle in the State of Wisconsin. I think there may be a Culver's in the neighborhood, so if you don't have those in your area (yet), you make want to sample the Butterburgers (no, they're not made entirely from butter - this may be Wisconsin, but even WE have our limits).

Enjoy!

12. 1) Take the Miller Brewing Tour
2)Remember that they serve Johnsonvilles at the park, so stop off someplace that serves Usingers Brats (which are the best on the planet) and get some of them.

3) Wave at Uecker for me when you're at Miller Park.

15. Really? I got a lot of free beer at Miller
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 09:39 PM by OmahaBlueDog
...and the day I was there, one of the free samples was Leinenkugel (which they do not brew, but do distribute)

Last time I went, it was with a friend who was diabetic (and didn't drink). They put three 10 oz glasses in front of me and three in front of him and I got all six. That was a fun afternoon!

16. You know what they say about Milwaukee -
it's a great place to live but you wouldn't want to visit there. Seriously, I live in Milwaukee and it's a wonderful place.Unfortunately, the Brewers stink this year. Actually, they stink almost every year. Great ballpark though. Restaurants-look for the family type places usually run by Greek folks-they usually have vaguely Greek sounding names. Great breakfasts, good burgers etc. Don't miss a walk along the lakefront if you can help it. The Spreacher brewery in Glendale offers a great tour. It's mercifully short and then they give you free samples of some very good beer.

18. I take most of my vacations in Milwaukee
Because my niece and nephew live there (with their parents, since they are only two years old and three months old). I love Milwaukee. The lakefront is gorgeous, the Art Museum is spectacular, there is good shopping, lots of great restaurants, and they have Miller Lite EVERYWHERE (always a prequisite for me). In the summer we take the high speed ferry that runs between Muskegon and Milwaukee; two hours across Lake Michigan thus avoiding the traffic in Chicago. It's wonderful.

In fact, I'm going there this weekend for my cousin's daughter's wedding in Waukesha.

19. It really is surprising...
I moved here five years ago for work. My first thought was, "Really? Milwaukee? Friggin' Laverne and Shirley?"

I was prepared to hate it, and I've been really surprised at how nice it is here.
