My newest poem: On Insomnia
my bed
holds and entraps

struggling and twisting
I seek my fatigue
I fall over the edge

into the deepest of sleep
away
from these

thoughts
that
pursue my
sleepless mind
even closed my eyes
see
my insomnia

to quiet the roaming
thoughts that possess me

an impossible task
the sky grows ever lighter
I am
the victim
trapped in
this

1. I hate sleep problems
Edited on Sun Aug-22-10 05:46 PM by Tobin S.
Sometimes I can't sleep when I need to, but then have to when I want to keep rolling. The insomnia is the worst, though. Fortunately, it's not a serious problem for me or I might not get anything done.

Nice poem, Peggy. Is this something that you are currently struggling with?

2. My dear Tobin...
Yeah, I hate it too. Fortunately, I am not struggling with it on a routine basis...

But this one night, I was up twice. It was awful. Normally, I sleep like the dead!

Glad you liked my poem.

Thanks!

3. You had me at ...
My bed holds and entraps.

Five words, seemingly simply put, that encompass the history of our lives.

How often are we "held" by the thoughts/dreams that we experience beneath the blankets we are loathe to let go of - long after their warmth has faded?

How many times do we feel "entrapped" by our own desire to share a bed with someone who, in the light of day, is really just a stranger who we know little of - or who knows us even less?

I share a bed with my best friend, my lover, my confidant. I have not always been so fortunate.

My bed has too often "held and entrapped". Your words speak to the memory of that experience - now, fortunately, a faded memory. But still there, in the corners of my mind, just the same.

5. My dear Nance...
I have often felt trapped there...unable to sleep. Or do anything else?

I appreciate your telling me about your experiences being so entrapped...I've been fortunate (or not) to have only shared my bed with one man. I can imagine, though, how it can be to sleep with a stranger...

Thank you for your comments...

I appreciate them, and you.

22. did you see the movie "coyote ugly"?
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 12:33 AM by DesertFlower
The slang term "coyote ugly" refers to the feeling of waking up after a one-night stand, and discovering that your arm is underneath someone who is so physically repulsive that you would gladly gnaw it off without waking the person just so you can get away without being discovered. Coyotes are known to gnaw off limbs if they are stuck in a trap in order to facilitate escape.

7. I have insomnia
It isn't fun but I've found that melatonin helps.

Thanks for sharing another great poem with us, Peggy. :grouphug:

8. My dear Terra Alta!
Melatonin, huh? I'll look into that. I'm not bothered by insomnia much, but now and then...it's really troublesome. As it was on the night I had the inspiration for this poem.

Glad you enjoyed it, sweetie!

9. Ah, insomnia
Edited on Sun Aug-22-10 08:20 PM by kimi
I know it all too well. Have had meds prescribed to get through it, but ya know, sometimes, they just don't do the trick. I've been on some major major drugs, and still, the hamster wheel of the mind just keeps on spinning. Sheesh.

"I seek my fatigue". . .

Yes indeed. Almost every night.

Once again, CAPeggy, you put the words right where they belong.

I'm sorry you know it all too well...

And talk about putting the words right where they belong: the hamster wheel of the mind is perfect!

Thank you, sweetie...

I hope you sleep well tonight...

11. Like in the dreams we'd be having Miss Peg
Our outstretched arms which seemed so close yet remains elusively out of reach. That sense of futility you hit so well here without using words that demean en route.

A good swim can tire the body and trick the mind into better rest.

12. I sleep one hour at a time every night, CP
I wake up, almost like clockwork, at 1:30 AM, seven days a week (I usually go to bed between 9 and 11 PM).

I wake up every hour after that...2:30, 3:30, 4:30...some days I don;t even bother going back to bed, but that means I collapse like a sack of we cement at some point later in the day.

I do not remember the last time I got a "good night's sleep." I basically don't...ever. I have thoughts that simply will not be quieted, usually about money and bills I owe.

13. I too was plagued by insomnia. About 45 years ago, until I developed
a self hypnosis technique. So in the last 45 years I have enjoyed my sleep, and never really had another problem with it.

16. I don't believe in hypnosis because of what I think it is.
Edited on Sun Aug-22-10 09:56 PM by RandomThoughts
But relaxation and self examination can help you find issues that are hampering you, if a word or image gets a visceral reaction, you know there is something in that macro.

It is like untying a knot. So you can go through the things that make you upset or uncomfortable, and reflect and think on them, to see if they are what you want to think on things. And actually find what is making you think that way on some topic. Sometimes you find you think differently then you want to, or some issue in your life you don't like that you change.

So you comb through your thoughts looking for the triggers that set off you acting ways that are not yourself, then pull them out, it is like they are sticky things, and you keep pulling till all the stickiness is gone.

It is like combing your hair.
