Bought new furniture: cat repellent question.
I know there are several brands out there, but which ones are safe for leather? And of course safe for kitties. No site has a full description of the products.
Thanks in advance!

1. Leather? With cats? Oh. Well, you see the thing about furniture is,
it was never meant to last more than a year or two.
As for cat repellent, most of the cats like the stuff.
Besides, it is the duty, it is the work, it is the obligation of a cat to destroy furniture. You should not try to interfere with nature.

3. You don't mean Mother Nature, do you? Oh, I predict thunder and
lightening at Rando's house.

4. LOL, If it tried to mess with me, it would not be good would it.

See the perspective. Although without claim of being all good or bad or anything, just a logical deduction :) If it taught, to teach me better ways, that would not be messing with me would it.

So that depends on your interpretation what I think that means.

But if you want to know, I speak of those that think in terms of natural law, not the ideas of treating environment with care.

So it depends how you look at it. Natural law, survival of the fittest has no component of any better actions, and in my view has lead to much bad.

LOL, what is your interp of lightning? There are some things that are like lightning but are not lightning, and I have seen some good lightning far more often then bad stuff :)

So could you elaborate.

5. It is the law of nature that cats are more fit than furniture. Therefore
they must destroy it, and survive themselves.
I cannot change the law. I can only obey it, or suffer the consequences.
Lightening is that great force of nature whereby electricity is discharged from the atmosphere to the earth, and should it discharge thru a house or a person it is that house or that person who may have violated those laws of nature, disobeyed those natural laws, disobeyed or challenged Mother Nature, and now suffers the consequence, if it only be inappropriate conductivity.
That person or that house may be french fried, or to quote a Bushism, freedom fried. Then perhaps they have more respect for Mother Nature, and it's laws.

10. Your post is full of assumptions.
Edited on Sat Aug-28-10 10:44 PM by RandomThoughts
None of which you can validate.

I contend, natural laws of survival of the fittest without compassion are not the laws of mother nature, from any concept of what that would be.

I assume by your comments you support rape, and the arbitrary killing of anyone or anything if you can get away with it, if you believe in natural law by survival of the fittest. That would lead to more offspring and better survival.

Is that what you are saying?

Natural law is an excuse for no morality anarchy, and deception to hide those beliefs.

Of coarse your belief in such things, would also mean you would lie about believing that, so really your answer is not needed, since if you believe in 'natural law survival of the fittest' then you have no credibility by your beliefs. Since part of those beliefs would be to lie to hide what you are that you think helps you survive.

6. I think leather couches are immune to cats..the leather is so strong. I'd look it up on the internet
if I was you. I assume you are talking about cat scratches. Unfortunately I bought a couch made out of vinyl and assumed it would be immune to cat scratches like leather....I now have the largest cat toy in the world in my living room. Seriously...look it up on the internet because you may be able to get by without spending any money or having to use chemicals.

9. I have seen leather cut into by the claws just like the vinyl. Leather
will cut, and then it is ruined.
The only thing I have ever seen that was cat proof was a Lazy Boy chair, with a sort of, well, I don't know, it's fabric, but the cat scratching had no effect on it.
Now I have another new cat, and another new Lazy Boy recliner. And the new cat has gone to work on the new Lazy Boy. It is almost like a corduroy and so far shows no effect of the scratches. But time will tell.
I wonder if we could have a future report on this issue. If the repellent works, and if there is any scratching or puncturing on the leather.

7. Go to Petco
or the like, and get sticky strips. They are about 1.5" wide by 12" or so long, double stick tape. Put them on pieces of paper if you don't want to put them directly on the couch. Cats hate them. You might also get yourself a water pistol.

Peels them off with his teeth...then scratches where they were!

14. I use this on corners, seams, and across backs
Edited on Sun Aug-29-10 11:45 AM by DainBramaged

Never failed me, bought new couch and chair this year, put it on all the seams and strips across the backs and sides. First time kitteh tries to scratch, gets tape on paws, pulls tape down onto self, no more scratching!! And it doesn't leave marks or residue.

I've used it for over 30 years, even back when it was TWICE as thick and sticky.

19. I've thought about trying it but I'm afraid it'd pull skin off his paws
Edited on Mon Aug-30-10 11:46 PM by snagglepuss
because it is so sticky. Did your cats ever get stuck to it? Did you need to be around to help remove the tape?

and my furniture remains scratch free.

15. Do you have scratch pads available?
They are not 100% effective but my cat almost never touches the furniture any more simply because he prefers the scratch pad.

18. My cat never clawed my furniture
But he loved "plucking" a cheap, natural-material doormat which was put down to protect the carpet inside the sliding glass door.
I did a search in DU for the picture I posted a few of years ago of that kind of doormat, but the website changed. I've seen these doormats at the hardware store-they are~ 3/4" thick seagrass(? ) from India, as I remember, and have no rubber backing.

Here's the thread about giving cats something they will love to claw, hopefully instead of your furniture!
