I have an idea and I need you to tell me if it's stupid or not.

Although I grew up in a fairly non-observant Jewish family, I went to religious school at an Orthodox synagogue as it was the closest one to my house. Since they didn't believe girls/women were supposed to read the Torah, my bat mitzvah was a group bat mitzvah with several other girls, and instead of reading the Torah, we all did speeches on a Jewish topic of our choice. My parents did tell me I could do a bat mitzvah elsewhere if I wanted to, and even though I did, I didn't make a fuss. This was because I had a learning disability, not diagnosed until years later, that severely compromises my visual memory. Despite several years of trying, I could barely read Hebrew and didn't want to embarrass myself.

Ever since then, even though it was at least partially my choice, I've felt like there's something missing. Most Jews only get to read the Torah once - at their bar/bat mitzvah.

So, I'm thinking of having at least a partial do-over. I want a chance to do what I missed because I was too afraid the first time around. I'm thinking of contacting the rabbi of my local uber-liberal queer-positive synagogue and asking her if there's any way I could have a second bat mitzvah of sorts.

What do you think? Ridiculous? Good idea?
