Brazilian Student Expelled for Miniskirt gets $23,600 & Reinstatement
So I ask you, is this too short?

A Brazilian university has been ordered to pay $23,600 (£14,840) to compensate a student who was briefly expelled after she went to class in a dress deemed too short by officials.

Geisy Arruda, 21, provoked jeers and insults from fellow students last October when she wore a short red dress to class.

The university expelled her for disturbing classes through "a flagrant lack of respect for ethical principles, academic dignity and morality".

1. Um. Uh.
This is going to sound horrible but does she wear underwear? I'm thinking if I were lecturing from the front of the classroom and standing directly in front of her row that I'd be able to see clear up Main St. whether I was trying to or not. So, yes...that dress might be a poor choice for an educational setting. I'd still defend her right to wear it if she so chose.

3. It actually is somewhat distracting. Where I teach, skirts that length aren't
uncommon, nor are extremely low cut tops. Given the small desks in our classrooms, the only reason I'm not aware of my students' underwear status is because I choose not to look. But it creates a feeling of awkwardness, especially in a lab class, to be constantly avoiding particular sightlines.

I'm not in favor of a dress code exactly, but I do wish students would consider the classroom to be a professional environment, and be a little more conscious of the style of dress that's appropriate. Heck, I'd even go back to the coat-and-tie days if it would set the proper example...

6. son's school has a very strict dress code- periodically they seem to send home
various bulletins about it. But when I dropped him off yesterday I saw a skirt that no way was 3 inches above the knees and cargo pants on a guy. I just bought the chinos and polo shirts for him like I was told to.... :D

7. Those accusing her of disturbing classes
via "a flagrant lack of respect for ethical principles....", etc., are the same ones who go around banging any girl they can get their hands on. Hypocrites!
