1. It's really a good cause.
The way we treat animals that we eat is horrendous. It's not nice to keep a blind eye to what is going on. I'm not a vegetarian but an animal lover and I believe there are humane ways to treat animals that we do eat.

3. Fully agree. And I wouldn't mind if the ad ran for a limited time, but
it seems like it's been there since at least the beginning of the year. Oh well.

cheers! :)

31. I agree it's a total gross-out
Reminds me of the anti-abortion posters. I know they're trying to shock you to make a point, but I think there are limits to decency that this exceeds.

2. MEAT IS MURDER!!!! (Just had to include that for completeness).
And yes, I'm a vegetarian - have been since '89. Still, that was intended strictly as humor.

More power to you, though. :woohoo:

6. Well, all three of my daughters have been life-long vegetarians and they are lean, strong, & healthy
They're also all 2nd degree black belts in Tang Soo Do (and my wife's a 3rd degree).

I managed to put on extra weight living off of grilled cheese sandwiches when I was on the road a lot, but the wife and kids have all stayed trim and fit. I did take the weight back off - back to my normal 135 now and without the high blood pressure issue.

5. Be thankful they don't show what goes on in a meat processing plant
Edited on Thu Oct-14-10 10:48 AM by Crazy Dave
I worked in one for six months (24years ago) and the lack of sanitation, mixing rotten, fly infested ground beef with the good, shoveling what spilled or fell on the floor back into the packaging system, workers urinating and spitting into the meat, etc.

95% of what we shipped out went to public schools across the US so if you wonder why your kids get upset stomachs at school all the time, they're probably not faking it.

I am so fucking sick of seeing all that death. :(

I actually had that thought the other day, when steak-focused commercial came on, whether vegetarians (especially the morality-based ones) are disturbed by commercials. I hadn't actually noticed how pervasive such imagery was (it was probably this thread that put it in mind...)

ribs and such - with much gusto. That or corn. :D

On edit: Yes, I am very much disturbed by those commercials, some of the more graphic ones to the point where I have to avert my gaze or change the channel. When you've spent a lazy afternoon under a Texas live oak giving a rescue pig a Swedish massage and you have seen what can only be described as "happiness" on that pig's face, those Jimmy Dean commercials look very different to you.

Thanks for the edit - that's pretty much what I was guessing about the commercials (it's always interesting to suddenly see where someone else has a completely different reaction to things I find innocuous) and your imagery is adorable... :)

28. We live off life.
We don't eat humans even though they are edible, so the idea that there are limits our morality places on our diets is easy for everyone to grasp. The only question is how far down the ladder of consciousness you want to go. No one would seriously argue that eating fruit, for instance, ends the life of anything. Most people, unless they are trying to insult vegetarians, wouldn't argue that a plant has consciousness or emotions or feels love, even if they have some basic cellular survival reactions (although there are fruitarians who won't even eat them).

I understand that some people don't have a problem eating animals, but surely you can understand why some do. If you've ever been around animals you've seen them mourn for loved ones, you've seen them show intelligence and thought in ways plants never could. Surely you can understand why some people's moral system separates animal life from plant life.

21. Those are kinda gross too.
I was just noticing a new commercial for a mouse trap where the mouse is killed in a chamber where you never get to see it -- you just throw out the whole trap. Two thoughts on that: what's wrong with a humane trap?, and just what we need - more plastic crap in landfills. :eyes:

35. Well, until now I didn't even know wtf that was!
I just looked briefly, my brain registered a 'I dont' know wtf that is so ignore it' thought and I went and clicked on my forums. Now I feel a tad ill. I'm not a vegetarian but have great respect for those who are. I've cut down considerably on meat based products and my child goes to a vegetarian day home. Once I get a job and have more money, when school is done, I'll be concentrating on buying more locally raised meat. Unfortunately I have a hard time without meat (I have insulin resistance so too many carbs aggravates it, plus I get anemia once in awhile) so it'll probably never be gone from my life, but I can make a change by buying locally, humanely raised meat. Before my ex and I split up, we used to buy a cow every year or 2 from the local 4-H club. We used to get a picture of our animal and everything. I used to look at the picture and thank the cow for letting us eat it. Weird, I know.
