Kimberly-Clark rolling out tube-free toilet paper

The toilet paper roll is about to undergo its biggest change in 100 years: going tubeless.

On Monday, Kimberly-Clark, one of the world's biggest makers of household paper products, will begin testing Scott Naturals Tube-Free toilet paper at Walmart and Sam's Club stores throughout the Northeast. If sales take off, it may introduce the line nationally and globally — and even consider adapting the technology into its paper towel brands.

No, the holes in the rolls aren't perfectly round. But they do fit over TP spindles and come with this promise: Even the last piece of toilet paper will be usable — without glue stuck on it.

The 17 billion toilet paper tubes produced annually in the USA account for 160 million pounds of trash, according to Kimberly-Clark estimates, and could stretch more than a million miles placed end-to-end. That's from here to the moon and back — twice. Most consumers toss, rather than recycle, used tubes, says Doug Daniels, brand manager at Kimberly-Clark. "We found a way to bring innovation to a category as mature as bath tissue," he says.

2. Do you mean that others don't save the rolls to stuff with their
dryer lint to make fire starter logs? Am I the only one?

6. So what the hell is my wife going to do for craft materials for her classrom now?
Toilet paper tubes are a long-time standard for kindergarten classroom crafts. WHY does Kimberly-Clark HATE America????

7. EXACTLY.
My mom was a first-grade teacher for 35 years. How well I remember the winter of the jillion one-gallon plastic milk cartons, which her first graders put together in the form of an igloo on the playground.

12. Totally agree.
And the "reduce, reuse, recycle" thing became even more pointed from Bush I on, when art started becoming decreasingly important and increasingly defunded in the schools.

I think you're probably a lot younger than me, but when I was in sixth grade and electives became available, I chose an hour of art a day--taught by an art teacher, who was full-time faculty. The only things students had to bring to class were our imaginations and a willingness to work; everything else was provided by the school district: paper, paint, pencils, canvases, clay, a kiln, books. That was an incredibly enriching year in my life and, believe it or not, it happened in Oklahoma -- about 1975.

It happens.

Would you happen to know when menopause officially starts?

19. When you stop waking up and just having to "have some".
Fortunately, my wife (whom I've been with for just shy of 26 years) hasn't even gotten close to that point.

23. Apparently they make pipes out of highlighters, so I discovered
recently! Yes, a yellow highlighter, take the felt marker thingy out, put a hole where there a strategically marked circle is at the end, then pop the highlighter lid into the hole (top cut off lid of course), line bowl with tinfoil -- oh my. Sorry, I didn't preserve the moment with a picture.

22. Why in the HELL
would anyone want to stack all those tubes end to end to reach the moon twice? And why do they need to reach back? can't you just shimmy back down the same tube poll you climbed up in the first place? This is a really stupid story. :grr:
