My refuge is in music. What a wonderful thing we humans do in creating music.
I was going to say we invented music, but so many birds (and I'm sure other creatures) would disagree. But how wonderful it is to listen to music. My personal tastes take me on outrageous journeys on the sound of a guitar just breaking the boundaries. Ace Frehley, yeah, him. But so many others. Pat Benetar had an awesome lead guitarist. Just listen to some of that stuff. But that's me. Any music. It's so therapeutic. Losing yourself in the music you love. What a wonderful gift to ourselves.

1. me too :)
When I'm sick of humans I have to think of what they (some) can do- Art, Science & Music. And music is the greatest. I love all kinds, it's totally therapeutic.

6. I do that sometimes.
I'll see a particularly shredful performance from some random guitar god and say to myself, "Monkeys ain't doin that shit."

how powerful music is....a simple song can change a mood, make happy or sad, take us back to when we were kids, bring back old memories. I love music!

4. Lay Down Your Weary Tune
Hey,
I also find refuge in music, oddly when I am in a downer of a mood I listen to music that is depressing. Your post about birds making music made me think of a song by Bob Dylan. Give it a listen if you can find it. It is Lay Down Your Weary Tune officially released on the Biograph boxed set. He does not use birds in the song, but other sounds produced by nature and how he could never produce anything so beautiful.

Peace

5. We DID invent music.
Bird "songs" are not musical. AFAIK no animals other than humans either appreciate or make music.

Other animals communicate with sounds of various kinds. They stake out territories, attract mates, and warn each other of danger. But none of that behavior constitutes music.

I have watched dogs and cats when music was playing. They can certainly hear the music, but they don't respond to it. To them it is just noise, like any other kind of noise.

LOL, hard to say if he's just pissed off at the noise or really dancing, but he does keep better time than some drummers I've played with. :)

10. Hmm.
Maybe this bird does appreciate music. He certainly seems to be dancing. But he doesn't quite stay with the beat.

Is there anything more useless than a drummer who can't keep time? ;-)

11. At least when trying to attract mates
I do think they do it with a song, not just a "call." Just because it doesn't have a rhythm that's recognizable to some of us, doesn't mean it isn't a song.

13. There's no better entertainment than good music, IMO
I like many kinds and have a big collection. One of the few times I dislike it is when it's soulless corporate product that just doesn't make me feel anything.

14. I have long maintained, in these very pages, that it is humankind's greatest and really ONLY
wondrous creation. I except, flatly, NO other art or activity of any other kind.
