Do you have a void?
Edited on Sat Mar-05-11 05:03 AM by Skip Intro

I think we all do.

Many try to fill it with another person. This isn't love. Though I do believe love exists.

Many try to fill it with drugs or alcohol. This won't work either, though I do believe there is some fun to be had there.

Many try to fill it with God, and a belief that some force beyond one's own power affects things in their lives. I cannot say this is not true.

Many try to fill it with wild abandon, knowing for certain that all that is placed before him or her is faulty, underdeveloped, unrealizable. This one is my favorite.

Many try to fill this void. This void that we all know.

Is it with us at birth? Is it something developed over time spent on this earth?

Most people go on, what else can you do, and form some wall of ignorance of it. But it's still there, isn't it? This empty place within yourself. This persistent emptiness.

If we simply stop and just be

2. I think that we are lonely creatures by nature.
I have felt voids my entire life. They have changed a bit over time as well as what I've chosen to fill them with.
I believe yearning is the main reason many people have voids.
We all want something more and it's hard to believe that this is it.
This is what life is.
Next year I will be older, have more gray hair, more wrinkles while the young and the lucky
have things I'll never have or will ever have again.
But one thing that I have learned in my 44+ years here on this little blue marble is that dwelling on your voids
and living in your head and living in a dream instead of reality doesn't do a damn thing to fill these voids.
I think it just makes you older and sadder quicker which IMHO shortens both the length and quality of our lives.
Best advice..Forget the empty spaces and if you are lucky they will fill themselves.

3. I always liked this quote from the movie "Wall Street"
Edited on Sat Mar-05-11 08:11 AM by deutsey
“Man looks in the abyss, there’s nothing staring back at him. At that moment, man finds his character. And that is what keeps him out of the abyss.”

Charlie Sheen could really stand to remember that scene. :-)

Seriously, I think this is at the heart of many mystical experiences...We all have egos that have been socially constructed. The ego wants to believe its in control of everything but I think on a deeper, intuitive level we all have this nagging suspicion that our ego consciousness is no where near in control of anything. And the ego is often disturbed by the emptiness around it...emptiness of loss, emptiness of unfulfilled craving, emptiness of fulfilled craving, the emptiness of knowing it's something finite in a vast, empty infinite. However, the insight beyond the narrow and ultimately false ego awareness into the larger emptiness of existence can, paradoxically, bring our awareness to a more authentic level than the shallow ego can perceive.
