I have never heard an owl in the yard before.

1. My dear texanwitch!
Now, THAT is cool...

A bit of wildlife right outside.

I wonder if it was hunting?

:hi:

2. It is also a little sad.
The woods and the area the owl would live is being turned into townhouses.

About 50 acres of open land and woods, hawks live there also.

I miss the open spaces we had, damn townhouses.

Still the sound was nice to hear.

4. Some species of owls do quite well in urban areas
I live in a small town surrounded by agricultural land. Our owl population thrives in town, especially in my older section with a lot of mature trees. We have always had two-three breeding pairs of barn owls in my area. For a couple of years, a pair nested in my maple tree until the hollowed limb fell in a storm.

It was quite remarkable watching them do the 'big nasty' up on the same limb every spring.

10. The zoo trip was fine.
I took some pictures of the animals.

I haven't downloaded them yet.

The zoo has two baby elephants.

I had my hands full with my buddy, she could still walk.

Took two of us to watch her.

8. I used to live in the woods alongside a little branch of the Brandywine River in SE Pennsylvania...
.
.
.
...amd one night, while walking through them to get to a friend's house,
I heard what sounded like a STRONG storm wind for about 5-10 seconds --
but felt no movement of air.
.
It was pretty eerie, but when I got to my friend's house, he explained
that there was some very large type of owl that came in seasonally to
breed -- and what I had heard was it flying by, probably on the hunt.
.
It had made no sound at all other then the beating of the air under its
mighty wings. The experience was like a rare gift -- never to be repeated.

11. We have owls. We lost one huge tree, so we did not
see them for a couple of years. Then they came back. We have a big tree by our front porch window. Sometimes, we can see the momma owl teaching her babies to fly.

We have barn swallows, too. They are rare. Like the owls, they are on the very back of our property. We have one old building back there we would like to tear down. But the swallows nest in it, and we just can't do it.

12. We get hawks because we feed the birds and many of them spend much of the day
in our yard. They hide from the hawks in our huge barberry bush.
I have never seen an owl here, but there were some across the street in an old cemetary with many large trees.
We are right on the edge of a small city, but there are are animals living all around us, indclding deer about a half mile up the mountain.
