1. Not sure I agree that it's Childs.
But a clever idea all the same.

2. Yeah, I think he missed some of the real nuance of the story by making it Childs.
What makes the movie so powerful is that the end, no one knows. Is it both? One of the other? Neither? I love the ambiguity - it totally heightens the paranoia and sense of chaos.

The writer here made the story too neat and tidy.

Though still a pretty interesting read. Like looking at Star Wars from the perspective of the poor schlupps on the Death Star who were just trying to put their kids through school and make the *&#&$*$ mortgage payment every month.

3. The Thing recently came back onto Netflix
The streaming service, I mean. I watched the uncut version for the first time in probably 20 years.

However, one minor point still bothers me (though perhaps they explained this onscreen and I missed it). Despite being winter time at the bottom of the world, it seemed as though the day/night light/dark cycle seemed about the same as in the continental US.

Did I miss something?

4. No, you didn't miss anything - the daylight/night was all messed up.
That's what you get for actually filming the outside scenes outside, and not doing it in the actual Antarctic.

:-)

And I'm sure it made it way easier on the director and others not to have to set up craploads of lighting and other trickery to be able to film in the dark and have it look like dark.

But the true almost constant darkness of Antarctic winter would have really heightened the claustrophobia and paranoia.

8. Quite possibly my most productive
"kick from the 20th page to save from obscurity and the archives" yet.

Thanks for tipping me off to this.

Oddly enough that movie/Alan Dean Foster book adaptation is what planted the idea in my mind to go to Antarctica!
