3. Seems like kind of a dick-ish thing to do
I realize that online retailers, among other things, contributed to their demise - but being a functional business, they obviously HAD bathrooms at one time. Did they close them just so they could make this sign?

5. When I worked there
(a different Borders to be clear) we were only required to provide restrooms when we had the coffee/snack stuff. Before then--no restrooms (although we let people with little-kid-emergency-potty situations use our bathroom in the back room). Maybe they ended the coffee stuff early and so don't need to provide restrooms anymore. I wouldn't blame the staff for not wanting to clean public restrooms--I still have flashbacks about what our customers did to ours. :scared: :puke:

6. Yeah, I can imagine.
I don't understand why people can't take care of public restrooms. Or at least not make them any worse.

7. It was an effin horror show
It got so bad that we went on an informal strike about it--flat-out refused to clean them and threatened to call OSHA. The asswipe manager backed down faster than we ever expected him to and hired a cleaning service.

8. Of course, there is the flipside, of business owners
who let their bathrooms go to hell - never fixing toilets when they quit flushing - no TP or Paper Towels, stalls that won'e close - or are missing altogether because Van Damme kicked them down, etc

I was in a rough part of Memphis several years ago (out on Lamar ave) when a bathroom emergency hit me - we pulled into a pretty good sized convenience store, but their bathrooms were in a separate building.

I opened the door, and the light would not come on - and I"m not going in the dark - not in this part of town - I basically had to just stand in the doorway and piss in the floor drain to avoid pissing myself.

9. It isn't necessarily that they don't maintain them. It is certainly, as I have
far too often seen it, that the general public steals the tp and the paper towels on a wholesale basis. I mean all of it, all the time, every day.
They also use a coin or perhaps bring a screw driver and remove screws from the latches, the hinges, anything.
They leave the water running. They steal the light bulbs, or anything else in there.
So after a while, guess what?

13. Yeah, I guess you're right
I didn't think one step farther, to the fact that any maintenance that needs to be done is probably the result of a customer.

10. My local Borders is shrinking the store from back to front...
Edited on Tue Apr-05-11 11:24 PM by Iggo
...as their inventory is depleted. The back of the building is where the restrooms are. The restrooms are now closed to the public. They put up a sign to tell people there are No Restrooms. I'm assuming the people at the store in the OP did the same thing, just a little funnier.

14. Since Borders et al put small local bookstores out of business
I find it difficult to muster much sympathy that someone bigger came along and did the same to them. Same with Blockbuster whining about Netflix.
