Any recommendations for pubs in walking distance from O'Connell and Parnell or near Temple Bar?

Taking my wife and daughters 17 and 21.

Also looking for stuff to do with them within an hour's drive that doesn't involve shopping. We'll have a car for a while.

1. Well, I have been there a couple times

and the best advice I can give you (which a policeman gave to me at the train station in Dublin) is to not leave your bags unattended, as there are gangs who will rip you off. Also, there are pubs on every block in Dublin, so I am sure you will find one to your liking.
