I had some fun at a local printer's museum today:
They had a lot of cool replicas of old printing presses, and newer linotype machines, plus some places where you could actually see them make stuff...

I got a lead slug with my username on it!

And then they printed this for me:

7. My dear bluesbassman!
They had all types of um....type!

I watched as the volunteer placed the letters of my name into the thing that held them, and then watched him put the whole thing into the box that fused it all together.

It was fascinating, even if I don't know the names of the parts... :dunce:

8. I may go over there. For the last year and a half I have been working
with ... a printing company.
In fact they had a huge 8 color Heidelburg. They did sell it tho. They also sold two others, which they still use for printing. All of which I saw in operation.
They also had a huge Man press. I never saw it run, but they did sell it. It was about 6 huge pieces and a huge control panel, with each piece about 10 or 12 feet tall and 10 by 12 feet or so.
Most of the work is done by computer. Then the computer sends the info to the press. The one who does the printing set up is not even in the same town as the press. He just sends by computer the file which runs the press.

9. Here's the link for the museum:

It's just a little place, but chock-full of cool stuff, and the volunteers all are very knowledgeable.

The work is fascinating!

11. Your new avatar? How COOL -- the Nina, the Pegga & the Santa Maria

I took a typesetting course in college. We printed up a poetry chapbook on
this fine old press.

I wouldn't have wanted to do that for a living (I'd be more stoop-shouldered
and squinty-eyed than i am NOW) but it was fascinating and the professor
had an extensive wine cellar and threw the GREATEST parties.

13. My dear MiddleFingerMom!
Thanks for your kind and funny words!

Your class sounded like it was too much fun. When I looked at the tiny tiny print they had to use, I was aghast. There's no way I could ever have done that!

But the parties and that extensive wine cellar........now those I could have dealt with!

16. My husband took me to the Maritime museum in Astoria WA
Some of it was interactive and it was so interesting. Gave me much more respect for the coastguard too.
