Am I the only one who feels bad for the rich boyfriend in movies?
You know. The one who eventually loses his girlfriend to the "cool" main character.

Sometimes, the rich guy is such a dick we're all glad when the girl screws him over for the other guy. Titanic is a good example.

OTOH, sometimes, the rich guy really isn't that bad a guy at all. The other guy, although "poor", is just better looking, a great dancer, more charming, and all that bullshit. Fuckin' bastard - I like the rich guy better.

1. Well, in TITANIC the rich guy was a guy you love to hate.

I kept thinking they'd imply in the movie, or outright state, that Rose had become pregnant by the poor guy and the young woman was his granddaughter.

4. The one I felt bad for in Titanic was the one we never saw.

You know, the poor sap who spent his whole life with that old lady, raising their kids and grandkids together. From everything we can tell, he was a devoted husband and father for a lifetime with her. But that's nothing, compared to to a guy she spent two weeks with on a boat one time.

Oh, and I just want to beat that old lady (not literally) when she throws that necklace in the water.

12. aargh! -- yeah, as if the world is better off with that in the ocean
Auction it (hell, pawn it, if you must) and then do good things :)

2. The Baxter

He isn't really a rich guy but he is THE GUY who gets left by the women who almost mistakenly marry him.

3. I'd prefer that the middle-class guy be the movie hero
Forget the rich or poor guy. Let the average guy be the winner for a change.

5. I re-watched "Reality Bites" as a 30+-year-old a few years ago and was like, man, the Ethan Hawke
character is a TOTAL LOSER! Get a job, ass!

6. I always have a problem with Ethan Hawke
Probably because he looks a lot like an ex BF of mine...and has the same cocky/obnoxious attitude. Hated him in Before Sunrise for the same reason. Ruined the movie for me.

7. Ha! I know how that goes. I dated a guy who looked like Christian Slater, and whenever I see him
Edited on Thu Apr-28-11 06:41 PM by Brickbat
in movies, I'm like, "Shut it, you!"

Speaking of Christian Slater, I had the same thought when I rewatched "Untamed Hart" as I did when I rewatched "Reality Bites" -- the love interest is not daring and unconventional and romantic, HE'S A TOTAL CREEPER BREAKING INTO YOUR ROOM WHILE YOU SLEEP! NOT COOL!

Nice to know I'm not alone in this! :D

I know what you mean about creepy "heroes"; I've been doing research into what's popular in the "chick lit" or "romantic comedy" genre (been writing my own), and I read a cute story that was charming and clever and amusing...but the love interest was a grumpy antisocial fisherman who could never be bothered to actually hold up his end of a conversation. Dude. You call that a love interest? Heck, I married one of those and I can say with some confidence that IT AIN'T NO PICNIC. :banghead:

8. I share your sympathy. I know how hard it is for a guy with a lot of money
to get companions.

10. As a soon to be Real Life rich gal, I can say...no.
At the end of the day, anyone who leaves you because you are not "cool" enough is stupid, and you still have your riches.

11. "Sweet Home Alabama"
Normally I despise rich people, in movies and in real life, but the character played by Patrick Dempsey was a decent guy.

13. But in the older teen comedies, didn't the rich kid lose the girl to the nerd?
Not sure if I'm remembering correctly or not.

Really? You don't have to like Van but you gotta hate the other guy...
