Oh yeah! It's the start of GARAGE SALE season!!
My first sale of the season...found a wonderful enamel dish on copper,
signed and numbered...got it home...it was made by a San Francisco artist
named Win Ng....

He's a famous dead artist!

It looks like this: (only red and yellow and green)

Copper & Enamel Dish, Price : Twenty-five cents

Joy of looking up the artist on the internets: Priceless!

2. I drive all day for work, between meetings all across 2 counties...
I love garage sales. They break up my day and allow me to
get out and walk around. I've found some real treasures and
lots of everyday use stuff.

I particularly love mid-century modern finds.

3. oooo yeah
I just remembered this the other day too! I was out walking, I thought how it's about time to look out for the homemade signs telling where the sales are coming up on the weekends.

That is a great find. I usually find some funny books or records. I can't stand those yard sales that are almost all baby clothes.

7. You never know WHAT you're going to find...but I avoid the baby clothes too.
No babies in my current scenario!

I'm looking for 2 items, which are the combined
Holy Grail of garage sale finds for me...

A Conant Ball China Cabinet and
an older model Gaggia (or other Italian-made)
all metal espresso maker.

One of these days, I'm going to go into someone's
garage or basement, and they'll be there!

11. Same artist. His name is Win Ng.
He co-founded the Taylor & Ng stores in SanFrancisco,
so I was hoping some California DUer would recognize
the name...

13. Oh I hear you. But sometime, even at those sales...way in the back...
somebody is selling something of Grandma's that they
just don't appreciate.

Last summer, my husband and I found these GIGANTIC
Waterford goblets, new and in the box, for $10.00.

The lady selling them got them as a wedding present when she
married "that jerk" and she didn't want them anymore.

Luke and I feel like the Lord and Lady of the Manor when
we use them!

15. The stories behind the "finds" are part of the fun.
I always want to puke when I hear, in business meetings,
that "people only appreciate something when it COSTS them
something"...

Really?

I only REALLY appreciate the stuff I get a "deal" on.
Or that I get for free.

19. Next week is the local senior center's annual yard sale.
Edited on Sun May-01-11 09:01 PM by Kat45
My mother was involved with it when she was alive and I always see some of her old friends there. It's a great yard sale because they sell things so cheap. Sometimes THEY try to talk YOU down because they're afraid it's too much! lol I've never found anything worth a lot of money there, though I tend to get there late after valuable stuff would have been found. I did once get a barely-used stationery bike for $10.

Since they have no room to store anything, they have to get rid of everything that day, and toward the end of the day, they'll let you fill a supermarket bag up with whatever and pay just $1.00 for it! I always feel bad because this is their big annual fundraiser and they could probably make more than they do, but they're having fun and still do ok money-wise so I guess it's ok. I usually get a lot of books, maybe some CDs, some costume jewelry. Many of the books are frivolous paperbacks, but you can find some good old books as well. I got a copy of "Lyndon Johnson & the American Dream" by Doris Kearns (yup, before the Goodwin). I also got a couple of books in a Harvard Classics series: Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations" and a collection of American historical documents, Barack Obama's "Dreams from My Father," a book by Ted Kennedy,
