Canadian DUers: Why is there so much collective hate against the Vancouver Canucks?
What's the inside joke or backstory I'm missing out on??

1. As an American DUer, I can say it's the US vs. Canada hockey rivalry
Here in the States, there might be a trace of the bitterness of losing to Canada in OT during the gold medal game back in '10. So, the apparent anti-Canuck attitude is an unconscious wish for the Bruins to avenge the US' loss to Canada (an American-based team vs. a Canadian-based team).

2. I was talking about Canadians cheering against Vancouver
Looking at fan boards and listening to sports radio, it seems like the general vibe seems to be "Anybody BUT Vancouver!" all during the playoffs...

3. As an American hockey fan
It's two-fold for me.
1. I live in Nashville. The Predators are my favorite team. Vancouver beat Nashville in the second round. My sister lives in San Jose. The Sharks are my second favorite team. Vancouver beat San Jose in the third round. Growing up, Boston was my favorite team (3rd now).

2. As I've watched the playoffs, specifically following the last three rounds (see item 1), I have found that I believe the Canucks as a team include several unscrupulous players who are willing to bend or break whatever rules they think they can skirt to win. For prime examples, see the foot stomp from Bobby Ryan against Nashville, Alex Burrows's taste in "finger food" and Henrik Sedin's embellishment any time anyone lays a finger on him.

On the whole, I think a lot of fans just don't like Vancouver because they had the best record during the regular season and they are not one of the traditionally popular teams like Edmonton or Detroit.

4. Simple jealousy.
Vancouver is a "paradise" city within Canada, and rarely dips below freezing. The rest of Canada is jealous of that. They think we're not "Canadian enough" to deserve a hockey team, and the thought of us winning the Stanley Cup drives them over the edge. Particularly Toronto fans, who haven't had a winning team since 1967.

Winter in Vancouver

Ha ha!

5. I'm a torontoMaple Leaf fan and I'm cheering for the Canucks.
I think people unhappy about the Canucks are just the noisy few that get the ink.

6. I find it hard to get worked up over any hockey team.
...except maybe Detroit. I don't like them.
