This is cool - Titanic was still adding theaters 4 months after its release,
and was the number one grossing film every day from the day it came out on Dec. 19, 1997 to March 5, 1998, and continued to run mostly #1 every day until April 2.

And it was still in some theaters until September, including more than 400 on Labor Day weekend.

Amazing.

Not that it was worth it, but those are impressive statistics.

1. My dear Rabrrrrrr!
It was a true block-buster.

I know that many here positively hate the movie, but I loved it. The sweep of the story, the great special effects, and yes, The Song...

Thanks for the stats.

:hi:

14. I thought it was very mediocre, except Celine's song, which was an utter crime against all art.

2. Didn't love the movie, didn't hate it, either
I remember my ex-wife and her sister bawling their eyes out over it, though.

3. My kid's a hopeless romantic. Watches it or listens to the music weekly since it came out.

The favorite that gets looped is this one. A beautiful piece, first time I heard it, I felt transported just sitting down as it was shared with me:

The version with Celine Dion is just as good:

I've never taken the time to view the film. But it's music to soothe the savage heart, which I need today.

So my thanks to you.

6. They are an endangered species. The bigger the heart, the easier to score points breaking it.
Yes, I'm feeling cynical myself of many things. My posts in GD are reflecting it so I should go delete them, I guess. Take it easy, Big T.

7. What was the line? "Take it easy, and if you can't take it easy, take it as easy as you can"
One of the local shows on KPFA out here always signed off with that

8. It is what it is. Supposedly, we volunteered for it, too.

4. I never got that movie
Seemed like just a big budget romance.

Of course, I didn't 'get' the Godfather either

9. I couldn't get it either.

But only because I've never bothered to see it :P

The ship sinks! Thousands die! The End.

12. There's even a conspiracy theory out now. 'Illuminati plot' to kill 2 extremely rich men who...
Opposed the creation of the Federal Reserve System by J.P. Morgan. Stumbled on it the other day looking for some pictures from the film. No kidding. What incredibly busy villains. Didn't match the theme of the movie about 'the better half' surviving.

:wtf:

I didn't watch any of the sequence of Godfather flicks. Not my style. Saddam Hussein was reported to be a big fan of it and the Sopranos on television. Was his life imitating American cinematic art? It didn't work out too well for him in the end.

I'd say it was a big mainly a big budget romance, but very well done.

15. Me, either - take a true story (a boat sinks) and then invent three hours of shit to wrap it in.
When telling the story of the ship and its sinking would have been enough on its own.

Like taking the story of the writing of the US Constitution and saying "That's kind of boring - let's rewrite the Founding Fathers to be killbots from the future!"

Totally unnecessary, totally artless, and totally stupid.

I have to get out the Kleenex every time I watch it. The Music is fabulous also.

16. I didn't hate it, but I don't need to see it again
and I never understood what the big deal was. The movie was light entertainment with some nicely-done sets, and that's about it.

And Celine Dion was (is) pretty awful.
