name a song that mentions a famous person by name in the song
To start Sweet Home Alabama

Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the Southland
I miss Alabamy once again
And I think its a sin, yes

Well I heard mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern man don't need him around anyhow

Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you

In Birmingham they love the governor
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth

Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you
Here I come Alabama

Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two
Lord they get me off so much
They pick me up when I'm feeling blue
Now how about you?

Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you

Sweet home Alabama
Oh sweet home baby
Where the skies are so blue
And the governor's true
Sweet Home Alabama
Lordy
Lord, I'm coming home to you
Yea, yea Montgomery's got the answer

2. "The Broadway Melody of 1974" - Lenny Bruce, Marshall Mcluhan, Caryl Chessman, and Howard Hughes
It isn't even all that long a song...

Echoes of the Broadway Everglades,
With her mythical madonnas still walking in their shades:
Lenny Bruce, declares a truce and plays his other hand.
Marshall Mcluhan, casual viewin`, head buried in the sand.
Sirens on the rooftops wailing, but there`s no ship sailing.
Groucho, with his movies trailing, stands alone with his punchline
failing.
Klu Klux Klan serve hot soul food and the band plays `In the Mood`
The cheerleader waves her cyanide wand, there`s a smell of
peach blossom and bitter almonde.
Caryl Chessman sniffs the air and leads the parade, he knows
in a scent, you can bottle all you made.
There`s Howard Hughes in blue suede shoes, smiling at the
majorettes smoking Winston Cigarettes.
And as the song and dance begins, the children play at home
with needles; needles and pins.

5. Rock On
Hey kid, rock and roll
Rock on, ooh, my soul
Hey kid, boogey too, did ya

Hey shout, summertime blues
Jump up and down in my blue suede shoes
Hey kid, rock and roll, rock on

And where do we go from here
Which is the way that's clear

Still looking for that blue jean, baby queen
Prettiest girl I ever seen
See her shake on the movie screen, Jimmy Dean
(James Dean)

And where do we go from here
Which is the way that's clear

Still looking for that blue jean, baby queen
Prettiest girl I ever seen
See her shake on the movie screen, Jimmy Dean
Jimmy Dean
Rock on
Rock on
Rock on

Hey, hey
Rock and roll
Rock on

Rock on
Hey, hey
Rock and roll
Rock on

Rock on
Hey, hey
Rock and roll
Rock on

6. Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs, by Brian & Michael
Edited on Thu Jul-21-11 04:20 PM by LeftishBrit
(A tribute to the artist Lowry)

He painted Salford's smokey tops
On cardboard boxes from the shops
And parts of ancoats where I used to play
I'm sure he once walked down our street
Cause he painted kids who had nowt on their feet
The clothes we wore had all see better days
Now they said his works of art were dull
No room all round the walls are full
But Lowry didn't care much anyway
They said he just paints cats and dogs
And matchstalk men in boots and clogs
And Lowry said that's just the way they'll stay

And he painted matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs
He painted kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs
Now he takes his brush and he waits outside them factory gates
To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs

Now canvas and brushes were wearing thin
When London started calling him
To come on down and wear the old flat cap
They said tell us all about your ways
And all about them Salford days
Is it true you're just an ordinary chap

And he painted matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs
He painted kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs
Now he takes his brush and he waits outside them factory gates
To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs

Now Lowry's hang upon the wall
Beside the greatest of them all
And even the Mona Lisa takes a bow
This tired old man with hair like snow
Told northern folk its time to go
The fever came and the good lord mopped his brow

And he left us matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs
He left us kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs
Now he takes his brush and he waits outside them pearly gates
To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs.

Your eyes are burning holes through me
I'm gasoline

You are the star tonight
Your sun electric, outta sight
Your light eclipsed the moon tonight
Electrolite
You're outta sight

Hollywood is under me
I'm Martin Sheen
I'm Steve McQueen

(repeat chorus)

If you ever want to fly
Mulholland Drive
Up in the sky
Stand on a cliff and look down there
Don't be scared, you are alive
You are alive

(repeat chorus)

Twentieth century go to sleep
Really deep
We won't blink

Your eyes are burning holes through me
I'm not scared
I'm outta here
I'm not scared
I'm outta here

Creeque Alley, Mamas & Papas - Lots of names
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjJlgFBjJ6s&feature=related

Just to leave the folk music behind;
Zal and Denny workin' for a penny
Tryin' to get a fish on the line.
In a coffee house Sebastian sat,
And after every number they'd pass the hat.
McGuinn and McGuire just a-gettin' higher in L.A.,
You know where that's at.
And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.

Zally said, "Denny, you know there aren't many
Who can sing a song the way that you do; let's go south."
Denny said, "Zally, golly, don't you think that I wish
I could play guitar like you."
Zal, Denny, and Sebastian sat (at the Night Owl)
And after every number they'd pass the hat.
McGuinn and McGuire still a-gettin higher in L.A.,
You know where that's at.
And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.

When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swathmore
But she changed her mind one day.
Standin' on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike,
"Take me to New York right away."
When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps;
Called John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps.
McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher
But that's what they were aimin' at.
And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.

Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps---
Don't you work as hard as you play.
Make up, break up, everything is shake up;
Guess it had to be that way.
Sebastian and Zal formed the æ…¡poonful;
Michelle, John, and Denny gettin' very tuneful.
McGuinn and McGuire just a-catchin' fire in L.A.,
You know where that's at.
And everybody's gettin' fat except Mama Cass.

Broke, busted, disgusted, agents can't be trusted,
And Mitchy wants to go to the sea.
Cass can't make it; she says we'll have to fake it---
We knew she'd come eventually.
Greasin' on American Express cards;
Tents low rent, but keeping out the heat's hard.
Duffy's good vibrations and our imaginations
Can't go on indefinitely.
And California dreamin' is becomin' a reality...

25. American Pie by Don McLean
Edited on Thu Jul-21-11 06:00 PM by Zephie
James Dean, Lennon, Marx

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAsV5-Hv-7U

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

So bye-bye, miss American pie.
Drove my Chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "This’ll be the day that I die.
this’ll be the day that I die."

Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock ’n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that you’re in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin’ in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.

I started singin'
bye-bye, miss American pie.
Drove my Chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "This’ll be the day that I die.
this’ll be the day that I die."

Now for ten years we’ve been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin’ stone,
But that’s not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while Lennon read a book of Marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We were singin' bye-bye, miss American pie.
Drove my Chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "This’ll be the day that I die.
and "This’ll be the day that I die."

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

We started singing,
"bye-bye, miss American pie."
Drove my Chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "This’ll be the day that I die.
This’ll be the day that I die."

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that Satan’s spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing,
"bye-bye, miss American pie."
Drove my Chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "This’ll be the day that I die.
This’ll be the day that I die."

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

And they were singing,
"bye-bye, miss American pie."
Drove my Chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "This’ll be the day that I die.
This’ll be the day that I die."

They were singing,
"bye-bye, miss American pie."
Drove my Chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die."

186. Well, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are kind of famous too
There's also a few other famous people indirectly mentioned in there.

Elvis Presley would be "the jester" and NOT "the king" in this scenario, which is undeniably confirmed by the line "With the jester on the sidelines in a cast." an allusion to Elvis' dubious movie career.

"The birds" - obvious reference to Roger McGuinn's band (Eight miles high and falling fast, which they certainly did)Ironically there WAS a British band called "The Birds" (no relation to The Byrds) who never really hit the big time themselves, but their guitar player Ronnie Wood went on to bigger and better things.

And while god only knows what the line "Jack Flash sat on a candlestick" means, it clearly sets up the entrance of Satan himself in the form of one Michael Phillip Jagger.

26. Abrahan, Martin and John - Dion
Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
You know, I just looked around and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked around and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked 'round and he's gone.

Didn't you love the things that they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free
Some day soon, and it's a-gonna be one day ...

Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill,
With Abraham, Martin and John.

29. Candle In The Wind
Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude

Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the 22nd row
Who sees you as something more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe

30. Righteous Brothers - Rock and Roll Heaven; Commodores - Nightshift
Jimmy gave us rainbows
And Janis took a piece of our hearts
And Otis brought us all to the dock of a bay
Sing a song to light my fire
Remember Jim that way
They've all found another place
Another place to play

If you believe in forever
Then life is just a one-night stand
If there's a rock and roll heaven
Well you know they've got a hell of a band, band, band

Remember bad bad Leroy Brown
Hey Jimmy touched us with that song
Time won't change a friend we came to know
And Bobby gave us Mack the Knife
Well look out, he's back in town
They'll all be there together
When they meet in one big show...

-----------

Marvin, he was a friend of mine
And he could sing a song
His heart in every line
Marvin sang of the joy and pain
He opened up our minds
And I still can hear him say
Aw talk to me so you can see
What's going on
Say you will sing your songs
Forevermore (evermore)...

Jackie (Jackie), hey what'you doing now
It seems like yesterday
When we were working out
Jackie (Jackie, oh) you set
The world on fire
You came and gifted us
Your love it lifted us
Higher and higher
Keep it up and
We'll be there
At your side
Oh say you will sing
Your songs forevermore (evermore)

37. "Once Upon a Time" - Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise
Once upon a time, when I was in high school
I was in love with you, lady and you treated me so cool.
I was drivin' a Chevy '72 had 4 on the floor, girl,
one hundred 20 it would do

I remember Marvin Gaye, singin?,
Let's Get It On...

There was a war, baby, somewhere across the sea
I didn't wanna go and fight, girl, but you were really lovin? me.
I remember Martin Luther King,
Lord he was the man, baby, that gave us all a dream.

I remember Marvin Gaye, singin?,
Let's Get It On...
Don't play with my love no,
I remember Marvin Gaye, singin?, Let's Get It On.

We used to have sweet music in the park
Lord up at Monterey a they sang throughout the dark
You used to wear girl, those hot pants
When you strolled down the hall,
all the boys wanted a chance...

I remember Marvin Gaye, singin?,
Let's Get It On...
Don't play with my love, no...
I remember Otis Redding, Sittin? at the Dock of the Bay---
ahh, he went away..
I remember Sam Cooke ya'll, Bring It On Home To Me,
from your love I can?t be free...
I remember Elvis Presley, and the Blue Suede Shoes
ahh it gave me the blues.
I remember Marvin Gaye, singin?...let's get it on

There's a time to fuck and a time to crave,
But the Shah sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave!
There's a time to shit and a time for God,
The last shit that I took was pretty fuckin' odd!
There's a time for drugs and a time to be sane,
Jimi Hendrix makes love to Marilyn's remains!
There's a time to live and a time to die,
I smoke Elvis Presley's toenails when I wanna get high!
There's a time to fuck and a time to crave,
But the Shah sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave!
Yeah, I am the ultimate God!
Don't even think of looking with your naked eye, motherfucker.
SHUT UP!

45. MDC - "John Wayne was a Nazi"
John Wayne was a Nazi
He liked to play SS
Kept a picture of Apolph,
Tucked in his cowboy vest
Sure he would string up your mother
Sure he would torture your pa
Sure he would march you up to the wall
Sure he would hang you by your last ball

He was a Nazi
But not anymore
He was a Nazi
Life evens the score

John Wayne slaughtered our Indian brothers
Burned their villages and raped their mothers
Now he has given them the white man's lord
Live by this, or die by the sword

John Wayne killed a lot of gooks in the war
We don't give a fuck about John anymore
We all heard his tale of blood and gore
Just another pawn for the capitalist whore

John Wayne wore an army uniform
Didn't like us reds and fags that didn't conform
Great white hero had so much nerve
Lived much longer than he deserved

Late show Indian or Mexican dies
Klan propaganda legitimized
Hypocrite coward never fought a real fight
When I see John I'm ashamed to be white
Death bed Christian of this you avowed
If God's alive, you're roastin' now
Well John, we got no regrets
As long as you died a long and painful death

48. Leonor - Katell Keineg (Leonor Fini, surrealist artist)
I don't have time for this - there are thousands.

Lots of Elvis Costello songs, as he writes about history. Let Him Dangle (Derek Bentley & Chris Crake), God's Comic (Andrew Lloyd Webber), Tramp The Dirt Down (Margaret Thatcher), all on the album Spike.

Lots of Van Morrison songs - let's not even go there...

Lots of Jonathan Coulton songs - my favorite mentions Kenesaw Mountain Landis, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, and Joe Jackson the musician, all in the same song.

Lots of Steeleye Span songs, as they are often either traditional songs or musical forms of historical fiction.

Lots of Al Stewart songs (whole albums of historical songs...)

Lots of Phil Ochs songs (political protest...)

No Sex - Alex Chilton (Baby Doc Duvalier)

Vincent - Don McLean - (Vincent Van Gogh)

Tulu Rogers - Appaloosa (Johann Sebastian Bach, John Locke)

Tjupurru - Unkol James Brown (James Brown)

Enola Gay - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (Enola Gay Tibbets, the person and Enola Gay, the plane)

and so on and so forth...

Edited on Thu Jul-21-11 10:21 PM by Kaleva
Farewell, my dear Schätzelein,
Ade, ade, ade,
It must, it must be divorced
Ade, ade, ade,
It is about Germany's Gloria,
Gloria, Gloria,
Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil! Victoria
Sieg Heil! Viktoria!

Sight and target are set
Ade, ade, ade,
Stalin, Churchill, Roosevelt,
Ade, ade, ade,
It is about Germany's Gloria,
Gloria, Gloria,
Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil! Victoria
Sieg Heil! Viktoria!

We rest and we will not rest
Ade, ade, ade,
Until that shatters the devil's brood,
Ade, ade, ade,
It is about Germany's Gloria,
Gloria, Gloria,
Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil! Victoria
Sieg Heil! Viktoria!

Give me your hand in farewell
Ade, ade, ade,
And goodbye to your mouth
Ade, ade, ade,
It is about Germany's Gloria,

Gloria, Gloria,
Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil! Viktoria!
Sieg Heil! Viktoria!

55. Motorpsycho Nightmare - Bob Dylan
Hi,
Dylan has a ton, but here is a twofer. It is a funny song too. Two snippets of lyrics.

There stood Rita
Lookin’ just like Tony Perkins
She said, “Would you like to take a shower?
I’ll show you up to the door”
I said, “Oh, no! no!
I’ve been through this before”

I said, “I like Fidel Castro
I think you heard me right”
And ducked as he swung
At me with all his might
Rita mumbled something
’Bout her mother on the hill
As his fist hit the icebox
He said he’s going to kill me
If I don’t get out the door
In two seconds flat
“You unpatriotic
Rotten doctor Commie rat”

Love love love the last line in the lyrics above.

Peace

57. busting up a starbucks
Mike Doughty

It will always be
The end of time
The end of law
The end of life
The dogs will howl
And yank the leash
From tree to tree
From each to each
Does the man who makes the shoes own you, clown?
You can’t even pry the nameplate off, now can you?
Fix it with your tiny fist there
James Van Der Beek and them sisters from Sister, Sister
The only one that’s ever felt this is you
The force that’s forcing you
To feel like busting up a Starbucks.
This bitter drink
Has made you drunk
The thoughts you think
Become unthunk
The sea’s ablaze
The sky is too
The water’s red
And the flames are blue

(if you consider James Van Der Beek and them sisters from Sister, Sister famous) I love this song!

61. US Blues! ( I'm Uncle Sam, that's who I am")
Red and white, blue suede shoes, I'm Uncle Sam, how do you do?
Gimme five, I'm still alive, ain't no luck, I learned to duck.
Check my pulse, it don't change. Stay seventy-two come shine or rain.
Wave the flag, pop the bag, rock the boat, skin the goat.
Wave that flag, wave it wide and high.
Summertime done, come and gone, my, oh, my.

I'm Uncle Sam, that's who I am; Been hidin' out in a rock and roll band.
Shake the hand that shook the hand of P.T. Barnum and Charlie Chan.
Shine your shoes, light your fuse. Can you use them ol' U.S. Blues?
I'll drink your health, share your wealth, run your life, steal your wife.
Wave that flag, wave it wide and high.
Summertime done, come and gone, my, oh, my.

Back to back chicken shack. Son of a gun, better change your act.
We're all confused, what's to lose? You can call this song the United States Blues.
Wave that flag, wave it wide and high.
Summertime done, come and gone, my, oh, my.

No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.

Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,

No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
He'll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,

Along the coast you'll hear them boast
About a light they say that shines so clear.
So raise your glass, we'll drink a toast
To the little man who sells you thrills along the pier.

He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back firmly on the ground.
He flies so high, he swoops so low,
He knows exactly which way he's gonna go.
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.

He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back on the ground.
He'll fly so high, he'll swoop so low.
Timothy Leary.

He'll fly his astral plane.
He'll take you trips around the bay.

This guy always conjurs up the feelings of romanticism

Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear.
How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air.
T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her, her, her....yeah

80. New Radicals (Beck, Hanson, Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson)
(sorry, can't post a youtube from work...)

You get what you give - New Radicals

Wake up kids
We've got the dreamers disease
Age 14 we got you down on your knees
So polite, you're busy still saying please
Fri - enemies, who when you're down ain't your friend
Every night we smash their Mercedes - Benz
First we run and then we laugh till we cry
But when the night is falling
And you cannot find the light
If you feel your dream is dying
Hold tight
You've got the music in you
Don't let go
You've got the music in you
One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
Can't forget you only get what you give
Four a. m. we ran a miracle mile
Were flat broke but hey we do it in style
The bad rich
God's flying in for your trial

This whole damn world can fall apart
You'll be ok follow your heart
You're in harms way
I'm right behind
Now say youre mine

Fly high
What's real can't die
You only get what you give
Just dont be afraid to leave
Health insurance rip off lying FDA big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they're multiplying
Fashion mag shoots
With the aid of 8 dust brothers Beck, Hanson
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes
Run to your mansions
Come around
We'll kick your ass in!
Don't let go
One dance left

{unsaid lyrics from liner}
Championed by a soulless media misleading
People unaware they're bleeding
No one with a brain is believing
It's so sad you lost the meaning
Never knew it anyway
Human natures so predictable
I'm a fool to do your dirty work whoa, whoa

94. Year of the Cat
(Al Stewart- Year of the Cat)

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat

She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
The year of the cat

Well, she looks at you so coolly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
The year of the cat

Well morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away your choice and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drumbeat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the new-born day
You know sometime you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat

98. Chad Mitchell Trio - where John Denver got his start.
Alma Mater --
"God bless thee, Ross Barneh -ett, we're going to miss Ole Miss"

Lizzie Borden -- Yesterday in old Fall River
Mr. Andrew Borden died
And he got his daughter, Lizzie
On a charge of homicide

Some folks say she didn't do it
And others say of course she did
But they all agree, Miss Lizzie B
Was a problem kinda kid

'Cause you can't chop your
Papa up in Massachausetts
Not even if it's planned
As a surprise (a surprise)
No, you can't chop your
Papa up in Massachausetts
You know how neighbors love to criticize

Well, she got him on the sofa
Where he'd gone to take a snooze
And I hope he went to Heaven
'Cause he wasn't wearing shoes

Lizzie kinda rearranged him
With a hatchet so they say
Then she got her mother
In that same old fashioned way

But you can't chop your
Mama up in Massachausettes
Not even if you're tired of
Her cuisine (her cuisine)
No can't chop your mama up in Massachausetts
You know it's almost sure to cause a scene

Well, they really kept her
Hopping on that busy afternoon
With both down and upstairs chopping
While she hummed a ragtime tune
They really made her hustle
And when all was said and done
She'd removed her mother's bustle
When she wasn't wearing one

Now can't chop your
Mama up in Massachusetts
And then blame all the damage
On the mice (on the mice)
No, you can't chop your
Mama up in Massachausetts
That sort of thing just isn't very nice

Now it wasn't done for pleasure
And it wasn't done for spite
And it wasn't done because
The lady wasn't very bright

She'd always done the slightest thing
That mom and papa bid
They said, Lizzie, cut it out
So that's exactly what she did

But you can't chop your
Papa up in Massachausetts
And then get dressed
And go out for a walk
No, you can't chop your
Papa up in Massachausetts
Massachausetts is a far cry
From New York

You can't chop your
Papa up in Massachausetts
Shut the door and lock and latch it
Here comes Lizzie with a brand new hatchet

You can't chop your
Papa up in Massachausetts
Such a snob I've heard it said
She met her pa and cut him dead

You can't chop your
Papa up in Massachausetts
Jump like a fish
Jump like a porpoise
All join hands and habeas corpus

You can't chop your
Papa up in Massachausetts
Massachausetts is a far cry

The John Birch Society --
(Even mentions Westbrook Pegler)
We've gotten Rosie Clooney, We've gotten Pinky Lee And the day we get Red Skelton won't that be a victory.

The Draft Dodger Rag --
I'm just a typical American boy from a typical American town
And I believe in God and Senator Dodd and keepin' ole Castro down.

101. I'm basically a rock and roller but I do like some country...one of
the songs that always got my attention was by Shania Twain, "That Don't Impress Me Much". She's singing about a really good looking guy whose incredibly conceded. I love the lyric "Ok, so you're Brad Pitt". She also mentions John Wayne and Capt. Kirk (because this guy she's singing about thinks he HAS IT ALL.... but she eludes to the fact that he really doesn't have "the touch"....mainly because he's just too into himself).

Lyrics to "Veracruz" :
By Warren Zevon and Jorge Calderon

I heard Woodrow Wilson's guns
I heard Maria crying
Late last night I heard the news
That Veracruz was dying
Veracruz was dying

Someone called Maria's name
I swear it was my father's voice
Saying, "If you stay you'll all be slain
You must leave now - you have no choice
Take the servants and ride west
Keep the child close to your chest
When the American troops withdraw
Let Zapata take the rest"

He name-checks Elvis, Michael J. Fox, Joan Rivers, Billy Idol, and Spock (fictional, but still famous).

-----

When I look out into your eyes out there,
When I look out into your faces,
You know what I see?
I see a little bit of Elvis
In each and every one of you out there.

Lemme tell ya...
Weeeeeeeeeellllllll...

Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

Man o man
What I want you to see
Is that the big E's
Inside of you and me

Elvis is everywhere, man!
He's in everything.
He's in everybody...

Elvis is in your jeans.
He's in your cheesburgers
Elvis is in Nutty Buddies!
Elvis is in your mom!

He's in everybody.
He's in the young, the old,
the fat, the skinny,
the white, the black
the brown and the blue
people got Elvis in 'em too

Elvis is in everybody out there.
Everybody's got Elvis in them!
Everybody except one person that is...
Yeah, one person!
The evil opposite of Elvis.
The Anti-Elvis

Anti-Elvis got no Elvis in 'em,
lemme tell ya...

Michael J. Fox has no Elvis in him.

And Elvis is in Joan Rivers
but he's trying to get out, man!
He's trying to get out!
Listen up Joanie Baby!

Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

Man o man
What I want you to see
Is that the big E's
Inside of you and me

Man, there's a lot of unexplained phenomenon
out there in the world.
Lot of things people say
What the heck's going on?

Let me tell ya!

Who built the pyramids?
ELVIS!
Who built Stonehenge?
ELVIS!

Yeah, man you see guys
walking down the street
pushing shopping carts
and you think they're talking to Allah,
they're talking to themselves
Man, no they're talking to ELVIS!
ELVIS! ELVIS!

You know whats going on in that Bermuda Triangle?
Down in the Bermuda Traingle
Elvis needs boats.
Elvis needs boats.
Elvis Elvis Elvis
Elvis Elvis Elvis
Elvis needs boats.

Aahh! The Sailing Elvis!
Captain Elvis!
Commodore Elvis it is.

Yeah man, you know people from outer space,
people from outer space they come up to me.
They don't look like like Doctor Spock.
They don't look like Klingons,
all that Star Trek jive.

They look like Elvis.
ELVIS!
Everybody in outer space looks like Elvis.
Cause Elvis is a perfect being.
We are all moving in perfect peace and harmony towards Elvisness

Soon all will become Elvis.
Everything everywhere will be Elvis.
Why do you think they call it evolution anyway?
It's really Elvislution!
Elvislution!

Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

Man o man
What I want you to see
Is that the big E's
Inside of you and me

That's right ladies and gentlemen,
The time has come!
Time has come to talk
To that little bit of Elvis inside of you.

Talk to it!
Call it up!
Say "Elvis, heal me!"
"Save me, Elvis!"
"Make me be born again
in the perfect Elvis light"

That's right!
You've got that Elvis inside of ya
and he's talkin to ya
He says he wants you to sing!
Everybody's got to sing like the king!

Like the king
Get that leg going now
Get your lip too.
Not no fool Billy Idol lip either
Everybody!
Yeah, we're rockin now!

Elvis is with us.
He's with us and he's speaking to us.
He says "Peoples!"
"Peoples!"
"Everybody!"
"Everybody got to sing!"

Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

Man o man
What I want you to see
Is that the big E's
Inside of you and me

Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

Man o man
What I want you to see
Is that the big E's
Inside of you and me

Elvis!

I would love to tour the Southland
In a travelling minstrel show
Yes I'd love to tour the Southland
In a traveling minstrel show
Yes I'm dying to be a star and make them laugh
Sound just like a record on the phonograph
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
'Cause he looks so fine upon that hill
They tell me he was lonely, he's lonely still
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

I stepped up on the platform
The man gave me the news
He said, You must be joking son
Where did you get those shoes?
Where did you get those shoes?

Well, I've seen 'em on the TV, the movie show
They say the times are changing but I just don't know
These things are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

121. MEANWHILE, RICK JAMES... by Cake
Edited on Sat Jul-23-11 07:58 PM by derby378
Disempowered, the scattering flock
Dances in a fever at the Castle Rock
Dust devils, cypress, ripening fruit
Ascending quick Into the author's bathroom
Fawn, Joe, and Tootsie are out on a wire
Lettuce-toothed junkies all full of desire

Meanwhile Rick James takes her nude
And there's nothing I can do
Meanwhile Rick James takes her nude
And there's nothing I can do
And there's nothing I can say to you
I've got a lot of work to do
I guess I'll leave it up to you

Uninvited, we'll stay if we want
Searching through your closets for your grandfather's gun
We'll go swim in your kidney, kidney-shaped pool
Scratching at the bottom for another clue
Fawn, Joe, and Tootsie are out on a wire
Lettuce-toothed junkies all full of desire

Meanwhile Rick James takes her nude
And there's nothing I can do
Meanwhile Rick James takes her nude
And there's nothing I can do
And there's nothing I can say to you
And there's nothing I can do
And there's nothing I can say to you
I've got a lot of work to do
I guess I'll leave it up to you

Oh father high in heaven -- smile down upon your son
whose busy with his money games -- his women and his gun.
Oh Jesus save me!
And the unsung Western hero killed an Indian or three
and made his name in Hollywood
to set the white man free.
Oh Jesus save me!
If Jesus saves -- well, He'd better save Himself
from the gory glory seekers who use His name in death.
Oh Jesus save me!
I saw him in the city and on the mountains of the moon --
His cross was rather bloody --
He could hardly roll His stone.
Oh Jesus save me!

132. Those Were the Days (All in the Family theme)
The version that ran at the beginning of every episode:

Boy the way Glenn Miller played
songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us we had it made.
Those were the days!
And you know where you were then.
Girls were girls and men were men.
Mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.
Didn't need no welfare state.
Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee our old LaSalle ran great.
Those were the days!

----------------------------------
And here is the full version:

Boy, the way Glenn Miller played.
Songs that made the Hit Parade.
Guys like us, we had it made.
Those were the days!
Didn't need no welfare state.
Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee, our old LaSalle ran great.
Those were the days!
And you knew where you were then!
Girls were girls and men were men.
Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.
People seemed to be content.
Fifty dollars paid the rent.
Freaks were in a circus tent.
Those were the days!
Take a little Sunday spin,
go to watch the Dodgers win.
Have yourself a dandy day that cost you under a fin.
Hair was short and skirts were long.
Kate Smith really sold a song.
I don't know just what went wrong!
Those Were the Days!

136. Chocolate Cake by Crowded House - Andy Warhol, Elvis Presley
Liberace, Tammy Baker, Picasso, Andrew Lloyd Weber

Lyrics to Chocolate Cake :

Not everyone in New York
Would pay to see Andrew Lloyd Webber
May his trousers fall down
As he bows to the queen and the crown
I don't know what tune that the orchestra played
But it went by me sickly and sentimental

Can I have another piece of chocolate cake?
Tammy Baker's got a lot on her plate
Can I buy another cheap Picasso fake?
Andy Warhol must be laughing in his grave

The band of the night
Takes you to ethereal heights over dinner
You wander the streets
Never reaching the heights that you seek
And the sugar that dripped from the violin's bow
Made the children go crazy, put a hole in the tooth of a hag

Can I have another piece of chocolate cake?
Tammy Baker must be losing her faith
Can I buy another cheap Picasso fake?
Andy Warhol must be laughing in his grave

And the dogs are on the road, we're all tempting fate
Cars shooting by with no number plates
And here comes Mrs. Hairy Legs

I saw Elvis Presley walk out of a 7-Eleven (that's right)
And a woman gave birth to a baby and then bowled 257
The excess of fat on your American bones
Will cushion the impact as you sink like a stone

Can I have another piece of chocolate cake?
Tammy Baker, Tammy Baker
Can I buy another cheap Picasso fake?
Cheap Picasso, cheap Picasso fake
Can I have another piece of chocolate cake?
Kathy Straker, boy could she lose some weight
Can I buy another slice of real estate?
Liberace must be laughing in his grave

Can I have another piece of chocolate cake?
Can I have another piece of chocolate cake?
Can I have another piece of chocolate cake?
Can I have another piece of chocolate cake?

137. And of course, Tom Paxton's 'A Truly Needy Family of Your Own'
Did you vote for Ronnie Reagan?
Howdy-do!
We've got a wonderful surprise in store for you!
You get more than lowered taxes
And a larger, lovelier home
You get a truly needy family of your own

Yes, you can get an actual family in the mail
Once a month you'll get a letter without fail
With a picture of how they're doing
And a plea for help each time
But the best part is you never send a dime!

Oh you got your boy in the White House
Like you always knew you would
And now it's time to take the poor
And stick it to them good
You get the same heart-warming feeling of
Denying a dog his bone
With a truly needy family of your own

You got more than a new cold war when
You cast that vote
You got a chance to grab some poor folks
By the throat
Now it feels like a million dollars to
Take some ghetto kid and say
"Yes, you had a chance but
I'm taking that chance away."

You get lists of all the help they used to get
You can hear the old folks cough on the tape cassette
You can hear the rats all squealing as they
Scurry across the floor
And the sounds of a street gang
Battering down the door

It all comes in a plain brown wrapper to your address
Please regard it as a tribute to your success
For success alone is not enough
To make a life complete
It's seeing the other guy fail that
Makes it all so sweet

138. Two Good Men, by Woody Guthrie
Say, there, did you hear the news?
Sacco worked at trimmin' shoes;
Vanzetti was a peddlin' man,
Pushed his fish cart with his hand.
Two good men a long time gone,
Two good men a long time gone,
Sacco an' Vanzetti are gone,
Left me here to sing this song.
Sacco's born across the sea,
Somewhere over in Italy;
Vanzetti born of parents fine,
Drank the best Italian wine.
Sacco sailed the sea one day,
Landed up in the Boston Bay.
Vanzetti sailed the ocean blue,
An' landed up in Boston, too.

Sacco's wife three children had;
Sacco was a family man.
Vanzetti was a dreamin' man,
His book was always in his hands.

Sacco earned his bread and butter
Bein' the factory's best shoe cutter.
Vanzetti spoke both day and night,
Told the workers how to fight.

I'll tell you if you ask me
'Bout this payroll robbery.
Two clerks was killed by the shoe fact'ry,
On the streets in South Braintree.

Judge Thayer told his friends around
That he had cut the radicals down.
"Anarchist bastard" was the name
Judge Thayer called these two good men.

I'll tell you the prosecutor's name,
Katzman, Adams, Williams, Kane.
The Judge and lawyers strutted down,
They done more tricks than circus clowns.

Vanzetti docked in nineteen eight;
Slept along the dirty street,
Told the workers "Organize,"
And on the 'lectric chair he dies.

All you people ought to be like me,
And work like Sacco and Vanzetti,
And everyday find ways to fight
On the union side for the workers' rights.

Well, I ain't got time to tell this tale,
The dicks and bulls are on my trail.
But I'll remember these two good men
That died to show me how to live.

All you people in Suassos Lane,
Sing this song and sing it plain.
All you folks that's comin' along,
Jump in with me and sing this song.

139. She Bought a Hat Like Princess Marina's, by the Kinks
She Bought A Hat Like Princess Marina
Written by: Ray Davies
Published by: Hill & Range Songs BMI

She's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
To wear at all her social affairs
She wears it when she's cleaning the windows
She wears it when she's scrubbing the stairs
But you will never see her at Ascot
She can't afford the time or the fare
But she's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
So she don't care

He's bought a hat like Anthony Eden's
Because it makes him feel like a Lord
But he can't afford a Rolls or a Bentley
He has to buy a secondhand Ford
He tries to feed his wife and his family
And buy them clothes and shoes they can wear
But he's bought a hat like Anthony Eden's
So he don t care

Buddy can you spare me a dime
My wife is getting hungry
And the kids are crying
This poverty is hurting my pride
Buddy can you spare me, buddy can you spare me a dime

She's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
And her neighbors think it suits her a treat
But she hasn't any food in the larder
Nor has anybody else in the street
But to look at her you'd think she was wealthy
'Cos she smiles just like a real millionaire
'Cos she's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
So she don't care, she don't care, she don't care, she don't care

144. "The Battle of New Orleans" by Johnny Horton...
Andrew Jackson is mentioned.

In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans.

We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin.
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin' on
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

We looked down the river and we see'd the British come.
And there must have been a hundred of'em beatin' on the drum.
They stepped so high and they made the bugles ring.
We stood by our cotton bales and didn't say a thing.

Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise
If we didn't fire our muskets 'til we looked 'em in the eye
We held our fire 'til we see'd their faces well.
Then we opened up with squirrel guns and really gave 'em ... well

Yeah, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.**

We fired our cannon 'til the barrel melted down.
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.
We filled his head with cannon balls, and powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind.

Yeah, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.**

145. "Rock n' Roll Heaven" by the Righteous Brothers
Edited on Mon Jul-25-11 02:32 PM by Tom_Foolery
If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.
If there's a rock and roll heaven,
Well you know they've got a hell of a band, band, band.

Jimmy gave us rainbows,
And Janis took a piece of our hearts,
And Otis brought us all to the dock of a bay.
Sing a song to light my fire,
Remember Jim that way,
They've all found another place, another place to play.

Chorus

Remember bad bad Leroy Brown,
Hey Jimmy touched us with that song.
Time won't change a friend we came to know.
And Bobby gave us Mack the Knife,
Well look out, he's back in town.
They'll all be there together
When they meet in one big show.

Chorus

There's a spotlight waiting
No matter who you are
Cuz everybody's got a song to sing,
Everyone's a star

(Everybody's got to be a star).

Chorus, repeat and fade out

which actually mentions more than just Duke Ellington

Here's a snippet:

Music knows it is and always will
Be one of the things that life just won't quit
But here are some of music's pioneers
That time will not allow us to forget
For there's Basie, Miller, Satchmo
And the king of all Sir Duke
And with a voice like Ella's ringing out
There's no way the band can lose

150. The Ballad of Grace Darling, by Cal Bagby
'Twas on the long stone lighthouse
There dwelt an English maid
Pure as the air around her
Of danger ne'er afraid
One morning just at daybreak
A storm tossed wreck she spied
And up spake brave Grace Darling
I'll save the crew she cried

cho: So she pulled away on the rolling sea
Over the waters blue "help, help" she could hear the cry
Of the shipwrecked crew
But Grace had an English heart and the raging storm she braved
She pulled away o'er the rolling sea
And the crew she saved

They to the rock were clinging
a crew of nine all told.
Between them and the lighthouse
the seas like mountains rose.
Said Grace "Come help me father,
We'll launch the boat," said she.
Her father cried "'Tis madness,
To face that raging sea"
Chorus But she.........

One murmured prayer 'heaven guard us'
And then they were afloat
Between them and destruction
The planks of that frail boat.
Then spoke the maiden's father
"Return or doomed are we"
But up spoke brave Grace Darling
"Alone I'll brave the sea"
Chorus So she......

They bravely rode the billows
And reached the rock at length
They saved the storm tossed sailors
In heaven alone their strength
Oh tell the wide world over
What English pluck can do
And sing of brave Grace Darling
Who nobly saved the crew
Chorus When she......

158. It's this one: "Bitch"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtnxvpIEg8w

Feeling so tired, can't understand it
Just had a fortnight's sleep
I'm feeling so strung, I'm so distracted
Ain't touched a thing all week

I'm feeling drunk, juiced up and sloppy
Ain't touched a drink all night
I'm feeling hungry, can't see the reason
Just ate a horse meat pie

Yeah when you call my name
I salivate like a Pavlov dog
Yeah when you lay me out
My heart is beating louder than a big bass drum, alright

Yeah, you got to mix it child
You got to fix it must be love
It's a bitch
You got to mix it child
You got to fix it but love
It's a bitch, alright

Sometimes I'm sexy, move like a stud
Kicking the stall all night
Sometimes I'm so shy, got to be worked on
Don't have no bark or bite, alright

Yeah when you call my name
I salivate like a Pavlov dog

Yeah when you lay me out
My heart is bumpin' louder than a big bass drum, alright

I said hey, yeah I feel alright now
Got to be a...
Hey, I feel alright now
Hey hey hey
Hey hey yeah...

159. Neil Young's "Pocahontas". Mentions Marlon Brando. Wonderful lyrics
Aurora Borealis
The icy sky at night
Paddles cut the water
In a long and hurried flight

From the white man to the fields of green
And the homeland we've never seen

They killed us in our tepee
And they cut our women down
They might have left some babies
Cryin' on the ground

But the fire sticks and the wagons come
And the night falls on the setting sun

They massacred the buffalo
Kitty corner from the bank
The taxis run across my feet
And my eyes have turned to blanks

In my little box at the top of the stairs
With my Indian rug and a pipe to share

I wish I was a trapper
I would give thousand pelts
To sleep with Pocahontas
And find out how she felt

In the mornin' on the fields of green
In the homeland we've never seen

And maybe Marlon Brando
Will be there by the fire
We'll sit and talk about Hollywood
And the good things there for hire
Like the Astrodome and the first tepee

Marlon Brando, Pocahontas and me
Pocahontas

Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America

The Bonneville salt flats had seen some strange things
But the strangest thing yet was a jet without wings
Once as a jet it played in the stars
But now on the ground it's the king of our cars

Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America

An airplane an auto now famous worldwide
The Spirit of America, the name on the side
The man who would drive her Craig Breedlove by name
A daring young man played a dangerous game

Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America

With a J-47, a jet for his power
Craig Breedlove had averaged four-o-seven per hour
Both man and machine had given fair warn
They'd set a new record on that warm August morn.

Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America

174. "Lullaby" by Shawn Mullins
Edited on Wed Jul-27-11 10:07 PM by txwhitedove
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoWEpKBgNM8

She grew up with the children of the stars
in the Hollywood hills and the boulevards.
Her parents threw big parties. Everyone was there.
They hung out with folks like Dennis Hopper and Bob Seger and
Sonny and Cher.

She feels safe now in this bar on Fairfax.
And from the stage I can tell that she can't let go and she can't
relax.
And just before she hangs her head to cry,
I sing to her a lullaby. I sing:

Everything's gonna be all right.
Rockabye, rockabye.
Everything's gonna be all right.
Rockabye, rockabye, rockabye.

She still lives with her mom outside the city
down that street about a half a mile.
And all her friends tell her she's so pretty
but she'd be a whole lot prettier if she smiled once in a while.
'Cause even her smile looks like a frown.
She's seen her share of devils in this angel town.

Everything's gonna be all right.
Rockabye, rockabye.
Everything's gonna be all right.
Rockabye, rockabye, rockabye.

I told her I ain't so sure about this place.
It's hard to play a gig in this town and keep a straight face.
Seems like everybody's got a plan.
It's kind of like Nashville with a tan.

Everything's gonna be all right.
Rockabye, rockabye.
Everything's gonna be all right.
Rockabye, rockabye, rockabye

175. "Rattlesnakes" by LLoyd Cole & the Commotions
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL3rcYKhT1k

Jodie wears a hat although it hasn't rained for six days
She says, "A girl needs a gun these days hey, on account of all the rattlesnakes"
She looks like Eve Marie Saint in On the Waterfront
She reads Simone de Beauvoir in her American circumstance
She's less than sure if her heart has come to stay in San Jose
And her never born child still haunts her as she speeds down the freeway
As she tries her luck with the traffic police out of boredom more than spite
She never finds no trouble, she tries too hard, she's obvious despite herself

She looks like Eve Marie Saint in on the waterfront
She says, all she needs is therapy, yeah
All you need is, love is all you need

Jodie never sleeps 'cause there are always needles in the hay
She says, "A girl needs a gun these days hey, on account of all the rattlesnakes"
She looks like Eve Marie Saint in on the Waterfront
As she reads Simone de Beauvoir in her American circumstance
Her heart, heart's like crazy paving
Upside down and back to front
She says, "Ooh, it's so hard to love when love was your great disappointment"

178. Where Do You Go To, My Lovely? by Peter Sarstedt
You talk like Marlene Dietrich
And you dance like Zizi Jean-Maire
Your clothes are all made by Balmain
And there's diamonds and pearls in your hair

You live in a fancy apartment
Off the Boulevard St. Michel
Where you keep your Rolling Stones records
And a friend of Sasha Distel.

You go to the embassy parties
Where you talk in Russian and Greek
And the young men who move in your circles,
They hang on every word you speak.

But where do you go to my lovely...
When you're alone in your bed.
Tell me the thoughts that surround you.
I want to look inside your head.

I've seen all your qualifications
That you got from the Sorbonne
And the painting you stole from Picasso.
Your loveliness goes on and on.

When you go on your summer vacation,
You go to Juan-les-Pins
With your carefully designed topless swimsuit

You get an even suntan
On your back and on your legs
And when the snow falls you're found in St. Moritz
With the others of the jet set

And you sip your Napoleon brandy,
But you never get your lips wet

But where do you go to my lovely...
When you're alone in your bed.
Tell me the thoughts that surround you.
I want to look inside your head.

You're in between twenty and thirty,
A very desirable age.
You're body is firm and inviting,
But you live on a glittering stage.

Your name it is heard in high places.
You know the Agha Khan.
He sent you a race horse for Christmas
And you keep it just for fun, for a laugh, aha aha.

They say that when you get married,
It will be to a millionaire.
But they don't realize where you came from
And I wonder if they really care, or give a damn.

But where do you go to my lovely...
When you're alone in your bed.
Tell me the thoughts that surround you.
I want to look inside your head.

Ah, remember the back streets of Naples,
Two children begging in rags
Both touched with a burning ambition
To shake off their lowly-born tags, so they try.

So look into my face Marie-Claire
And remember just who you are.
Then go and forget me forever
But I know you still bear the scar deep inside, yes, you do.

Ah, I know where you go to my lovely...
When you're alone in your bed.
I know the thoughts that surround you,
Cause I can look inside your head.
