1. thank you, thank you!
yes, please keep this at the top! I'm so glad to see a website created for this visit. I'm confused though - Is Bush speaking in Seattle on the 23rd? All I can tell from the newspaper is the Eastside visit on August 22. Joel Connelly's piece says he flies out the nite of 8/22, so a rally in Seattle on 8/23 seems too late!

Connelly also says Howard Dean is arriving on 8/24 for an evening rally at Westlake Center.

4. Hey SeattleDem
I understand your confusion. The August 22/23 protest
are being organized by a coalition of activist groups
and individual (free agent :)) activists.

The MVP (Major Visibility Project) org has wisely
opted not to chase Back Door Bush around as he bobs
and weaves to avoid the inevitable protestors
(who are of course corralled in perversely named
"Free Speech Zones." So they have scheduled a
huge rally at the Seattle waterfront to protest
his presence and policies, and the niggling little
fact that he's selected not elected. So that rally is not
meant to be a confrontation with Der Resident,
only a huge show of unity against him. William
Rivers Pitt is scheduled to speak at that rally.

If Der Resident has flown out already, fine.
Good riddance...as they say.

The activist orgs and individuals planning the August 22
Eastside activities have different goals and strategies.
They will more likely coincide with Back Door Bush’s scheduled “events,” which are generally synonymous with “fund raiser.”

The official website, stopbushseattle.com, is being maintained
to keep people apprised of all protest activities over the
two day period. It links to the websites of some of our partnering orgs, of which MVP is one.

See you in the streets!

5. thanks, I like the goals of both groups
I would really love, more than anything, to see thousands of people protesting outside his luncheon that Friday though! I think that will get more media coverage than the Saturday event.

But either way, any and all protests are good and doing it at Myrtle Edwards Park should get some good visibility too.

thanks!

In The Northwest: Bush is bringing 2004 campaign to the Left Coast

By JOEL CONNELLY
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER COLUMNIST

Bigdoms of local business are soliciting four-figure contributions for President Bush's upcoming fund-raiser, but ordinary taxpayers shouldn't feel left out: They will help pay for the president's trip.

A friend at Microsoft Corp. passed on the following come-on from MsPAC, Microsoft's political action committee:

"The president will be in Bellevue on August 22 to support his re-election campaign, and we have a very unique opportunity to show our support for him. Along with U.S. Rep. Jennifer Dunn, John Conners is co-hosting this rare fund-raiser which will be a lunchtime reception at the residence of Susan and Craig McCaw. Tickets are $2,000 per person."

>>snip<<

The public events allow the White House to bill taxpayers for half the hotel rooms, automobile rentals and other local expenses of what are essentially political trips. The $57,000-an-hour cost of flying Air Force One is always a public expense, because Bush is president wherever he goes.

Expect Air Force One to hit a bit of turbulence as the president makes his way up the Left Coast.

Of course, there will be leather-lunged demonstrators in Seattle and Portland. They were absent from Bush stops in 2000 as the loony left concentrated its energies on beating up Al Gore.

I will be at as many events as I can!

Although having to confront the moron in our state is not really "good news," seeing the organization and hard work of the volunteers is.

Will Pitt is an inspirational writer and speaker, although I have only heard him on one radio talk show. I hope I can make it to Town Hall for the Elliot Bay Books event.

11. keep this kicked, and write more when it's over!
I'm still pregnant, so it's looking more and more unlikely that I'll be there, as I have to have this baby before the end of next week (with medical help if necessary!).

For those that attend the rallies, please come back and post how they were - I'll be looking forward to reading about it (since I assume the local TV coverage will be poor....)

15. Thank you pfitz59!
You raise a very important point.
We want as many cameras there as possible.

Whether it’s video, digital, good ‘ol fashioned camera,
or a disposable -- Bring it with you!

We actually have a signup link on the stopbushseattle.com
site encouraging people to sign up to be a part of the
video observer team.

That way if we need photos or footage for any reason,
we'll have a contact list of people to go to for it.

And this list will be destroyed after the event,
and not shared with any other org for any other purpose.
That's true of all our sign up lists.

19. Logistics for Hunt's Point
(Thanks to Diane L. for this information)

LOGISTICS FOR DEMONSTRATING NEAR HUNTS POINT AND 520 ON 8/22

For those who have expressed a desire to direct their messages to President Bush and his supporters and for those who want to banner the right of ways before the event here is some information about the area.

Address of Bush luncheon: 3858 Hunts Point Dr (84th Ave NE over 520 and straight to Hunts Point Dr.(1st stop sign & dead end sign) turn right to address on right / east side.

Time of Luncheon:

Doors open at 11:30 A.M.
11:45 A.M. Host committee Reception
12:00 P.M. Luncheon

Parking near Hunts Point overpass/entrance: south of 520 on Points Dr east of NE 28th ST & 84th Ave NE (east of Tulley’s on south side of road).

Parking near other 520 overpasses:

Park & Ride at Evergreen Rd and 28th St

Fairweather Park north of 520 on Evergreen Pt Rd and NE 32 ST (a trail runs along the north side of 520 which may provide vantage points for signs/banners)

Several small Park & Rides along Bellevue Way/Lake Washington Blvd and South Kirkland Park and Ride on 108th Ave NE north of Northup Way with good bus access.

Most Park & Rides fill up very early so we also need some good drop off points in the event we want to drop off people with signs/banners and pick them up later.

Drop Off Site:

92nd Ave NE (Yarrow Pt Dr) just north of 520 on left/west side of street. Plenty of room also has access to trail.

Kayak Launch: (in case some of our Paddlers for Peace want to launch a flotilla)

NE 42nd ST off 92nd Ave on Yarrow Point north of 520. Public launch, but, very tight maneuvering and NO PARKING.

Better locations may be available along the Kirkland waterfront.

21. boats at hunt's point
According to an unconfirmed report water ways around hunt's point will be closed (100 yard perimeter?).

Also, police will close part but not all of hunt's point road.

It is expected that hundreds (maybe a thousand?) protestors will show up at Hunt's Point starting at 10:30 AM. There is exptected to be a union contingent of a few hundred.
