Report from the Philly4Dean rally
Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 06:59 PM by Ramsey
Tonight is the presidential candidates Q&A at the National Constitution Center sponsored by the metal workers union, so 7 of the Democratic candidates are here in town. Kerry had a rally earlier in the day, which I was not able to attend (too early). Dean scheduled a rally to start at 4 pm, he was to speak at 5 pm. The Q&A was to start at 6 pm. Dean was late; his plane was delayed due to weather and that may be why the whole thing started late on CSpan. While we were waiting we heard from local politicians and organizers, and the volunteers, of which there dozens, took people's names and contributions.

And here's why the Dean campaign is so brilliant. The rally was held on the lawn between the Liberty Bell and Independence Visitor's Center, and one block from the Constitution Center where the debate was being held. The rally ended right before the debate began. There was a crowd of over 4000 people at the Dean rally. Dean told us that was the largest crowd in a major city yet.

And even though he was an hour late and probably held up the start of the debate, he still spoke to the assembled crowd for 15 minutes. Then as he walked the one block to the Constitution Center, the entire crowd followed him. We then gathered on the lawn in front of the Center and for ten minutes or so chanted for Dean, waving our signs. The entire Center has a glass front, and the event was being held on the second floor. All of the attendees were sitting in full view of the front lawn in a large room on the second floor, and as we arrived on the lawn, everyone inside was turning around to look down and even wave at the Dean crowd. Even some of the cameras inside came over to the window to film the crowd of Dean supporters below.

I don't know if any of this could be heard as the event began, but we were making quite a stir!
