Ex-Guantanamo chaplain at FGCU tonight

James Yee has spoken to classes, faculty members and staff ahead of his speech tonight at Florida Gulf Coast University, part of what he calls ongoing effort to educate the public about the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and how it will affect the U.S. in the long run.

“The public, in general, is uneducated about the reality of Guantanamo and to what extent it has damaged the credibility and national reputation for being an advocate of human rights,” Yee said this afternoon at WGCU studios during a meet-and-greet before taping a program there.

Yee, a former U.S. Captain and Muslim chaplain, was arrested and imprisoned for espionage and aiding the alleged terrorists in the prison camp. The charges were later dropped and Yee was honorably discharged.

Yee said the United States was using religion as a weapon at Guatanamo and he was targeted because he raised concerns ...

1. I heard James Yee speak publicly last year and was very impressed.

His story is compelling. He was persecuted for his humanity and devotion to his oath to his God and to the military.

I'm glad he's still touring the country.
