Obama crowds in Houston

By Mike Ward | Tuesday, February 19, 2008, 04:15 PM

Four hours and counting before his first Houston appearance, Barack Obama was already packing them in.

At 4 p.m., more than 500 people — a mixed crowd of African Americans, young Hispanics and whites — were lined up outside the Toyota Center, spilling into downtown streets, for an expected 8 p.m. appearance.

Texans for Obama organizers said 15,000 are expected for the sold-out ticket event.

“I’ve been here since lunch… . This is history in the making and I want to be part of it,” said Nita Silas, 62, a Houston grandmother who stood in line with three of her seven grandchildren. “I voted for Bush last time … but I’m for Sen. Obama (now). He represents change. We owe that to the coming generations.

“This country needs to get right with itself.”

Outside the domed, block-square events center, lines of waiting ticket-holders snaked up and down sidewalks. Campaign volunteers led the crowd in chants of “Time for Change” that echoed back and forth between waiting groups.

“This is pretty cool … like a (rock) concert, not a political event,” said Cherie Ng, 23, a Houston legal assistant who was waiting with four girlfriends. “We took the afternoon off after we got tickets. I’ve never voted before, but I will now.

Us, too, said the friends.

1. And that doesn't make you feel profoundly uneasy?

3. Exactly.
Just reading that accounting made me feel a bit hinky.

And I am definitely no Clintonista.

8. Jumpy, nervous
No offense meant, but those mostly young crowds that Obama draws kind of freak me out.

And I don't like all of that chanting business, either.

9. It's definitely something I've never seen in my life, or at least been
aware of. As for the chanting, do you mean stuff like 'yes we can' and 'Gobama'? That doesn't worry me; hell, people chant at sporting events.

Yea, I looked it up-nervous was the def.

I'm enjoying this, but I am an Obama supporter, so that could explain it. :hi:

are circling round and round; they also just guesstimated 15,000. :woohoo:

12. That makes my heart feel good....I don't remember a time I've been
so proud of Americans in my lifetime....exercising their political preferences...wonderful! I felt the same way as when we landed on the moon...silly but true!
