It may be called the "Texas Two-Step," but for Democrats in West Texas and across the state, their party's presidential delegate election system is more like a multistep dance that will go on at least until early June, even though the state's primary was March 4.

But so far, with the exception of some minor problems in two Lubbock precincts, no one in West Texas seems to be complaining, as some did right after the election. In fact, a few say they are even enjoying the process.

"We're ready," said Abel Bosquez, chairman of the Potter County Democratic Party, which, like all local Democratic parties across Texas, will have its county convention on Saturday. The 6 p.m. meeting at the Palo Duro High School auditorium in Amarillo is expected to draw about 450 people, half of them delegates chosen on the evening of March 4 and the other half alternates, Bosquez said.

"Everybody is excited," he said. "This is a new event that we are going through that was set up a few years ago. We had some problems with some precincts, but they have been taken care of and now we are ready to continue with the delegate selection process."

As specified in the Texas Democratic Party delegate selection rules approved two decades ago, there will be about 260 county and state senatorial conventions throughout Texas on Saturday for the purpose of electing the delegates who will attend the state's Democratic Convention on June 6-7 in Austin.
