Are Michele Bachmann's Views About 'Christian Submission' Even More Extreme Than She's Letting On?
By Frank Schaeffer
AlterNet

The people, churches and groups that shaped Bachmann's thinking are far more anti-woman than most Americans fully comprehend.

Michele Bachmann told a barefaced lie the other day. She was asked in the Republican candidates' debate with the other Republican contenders, “As president, would you be submissive to your husband?"

Bachmann answered: “Marcus and I will be married for 33 years this September 10th. I’m in love with him. I’m so proud of him. And both he and I — what submission means to us, if that’s what your question is, it means respect. I respect my husband. He’s a wonderful, godly man, and a great father. And he respects me as his wife.”

She either lied, has changed her mind, or she says one thing to a national audience and another to her hard-right evangelical followers.

1. I think they are
I want to know if she has plans to round up all of us Heathens/Pagans/Wiccans/etc. for forced re-education and
conversion to her form of Christianity.

We joke about the but I worry that she may
actually desire to follow in the Inquisition's footsteps if possible.

Deep down she probably thinks the first amendment's freedom of religion was meant that you could choose which type of Christianity
and that all other religions have no rights.

2. Yes.
Even more, it's her overt statement that she doesn't approve of all that bra burning back in the '60s.

Conservatives, even the women and ethnics of that stripe, have to oppose everything that happened during the Age of Aquarius, from the Equal Rights Ammendment and Medicare to the war protests and psychedelic awareness. It all unfolded uner the umbrella of "The Great Society".

3. She was smoothing that over for sure
What she said didn't even make sense, if you mean respect you SAY respect, not submission. These extremist Christians mean the words they use, they mean for a woman to submit to the rule of her husband in all things. Bill Clinton was torn apart for avoiding uncomfortable things through vague use of words but these theocrats can claim a word to have a totally different meaning than the definition generally used and get by with it.

I've been hoping the American people would wake up for a long time, our way of life is threatened, by homegrown extremists of the Christian variety.

well yeah. She is also a liar. But, she is doing well in the polls, she could very well end up being the nominee.

6. Bachmann is a total joke.
Her husband is a walking punch line. Her constant gaffes have made her a national laughingstock ("Happy birthday Elvis" anyone?).

We should enjoy her while we have her. The flameout is coming. As she climbs out of the hermetically sealed right-wing nutosphere and appears in public more and more, she is going to run head on into a brick wall of reality, something that doesn't even exist in Right-Wing World.

So don't panic. Just enjoy!

7. That woman is an absolute nutter!
Should you elect her, I shall immediately move to a radiation-skip zone.
