Tea Party Rage Dies

Aug 25, 2011 9:08 PM EDT

A movement built on anger is simmering down as it confronts the realities of governing. Patricia Murphy on the newer, calmer town halls.

A couple of years back, Lindsey Graham had a bulls-eye on his back, at least among Tea Party types here in South Carolina.

The Charleston branch was so enraged with the senator’s work on climate change legislation in 2009 that it pushed the local GOP to formally censure him for “bipartisanship that continues to weaken the Republican brand and tarnish the ideals of freedom.”

Across the state in Greenville, equally livid activists constructed a wing tip-wearing effigy of the senator that they flushed down a fake toilet, mounted on the bed of a pick-up truck of course, as a part of a “RINO hunt” to symbolically eliminate Graham and other “Republicans in Name Only” from the Senate.

But after two years, a hugely successful midterm election, and almost a year of GOP control of the House of Representatives, Tea Party activists here and across the country seem to be losing some of their steam.

1. Perhaps they're
embarrassed. I sure would be if I had behaved like a low-information lunatic and voted for cold-hearted, delusional idiots who haven't done a single thing I thought I wanted. Nah. They just haven't been manipulated into their customary frenzy yet. Wait till next summer.

3. It's not phony. They just don't understand who to be mad at. They are fruit to hold onto
What they had before. They don't realize it's the very republicans that sold them a bill of goods.

4. Don't cha think that just may--those Americans who were supporting
the Tea Party kinda flipped out when they discovered
this new Movement they were joining--WANTS TO DISMANTLE
SS, MEDICARE and MEDICAID??? The rank and file carried
signs in the earliests protests: Keep you hands off my
SS. Leave my Medicare alone. Me thinks that when the
people began to realize the TEA PARTY is just a BIG
BUSINESS Front. Chamber of Commerce financed.

5. Harry Got It Right
Harry Reid Predicted the Tea Party would be reduced to a fart in the wind. He's looking very prophetic right now.

8. Any future overhaul of the Democratic Party will include former Tea...
Party backers. This may be upsetting to some here, but the very fact they are disillusioned, and got the shaft, is all the more reason any future progressive change will have to include at least some of these folks. The Democratic Party cannot afford to open up another front in the culture war, and Obama cannot further weaken the social safety net and give these folks a more authentic reason to oppose progressive change.
