Dean Is The New McCain/Carter/Goldwater/McGovern/Reagan
Dean Is the New McCain
And the new Carter, and Goldwater, and McGovern, and Reagan

Brown may be the new black, but Howard Dean is the new Brown. Jerry Brown, that is: a former governor who seems impervious to the tempering influence of focus groups. Or maybe Dean's the new George McGovern: an anti-war candidate destined to destroy his party. Or perhaps he's the new John McCain: a tightly wound straight-shooter known for his (usually) winning candor.

Dean, the once-obscure Democratic presidential candidate who doubled up on the covers of Newsweek and Time this week, has officially gone mainstream. But it's not like Dean came out of nowhere, campaign-watchers agree. He came straight out of the history books—they just can't decide which one.

So, here's Slate's brief guide to the many faces of Dean.

1. I just find it amusing how no matter what reservation you have
about Dean, his supporters have an answer for you as to why that shouldn't be an issue. Or if they don't then they say "But he speaks out against Bush".

This isn't bad, good, or indifferent. Just an observation.

2. Or no matter what reason you support Dean,

the detractors always have a comeback as to why Dean is the antithesis of the reason you support him.

This isn't bad, good or indifferent. Just an observation.

4. For The Record
I have come out here arguing against comparing Dean to McGovern or whatever loser you can come up with. This thread is not intended as a bash, if that's what you think.

10. If You Had Bothered To Search The Link
You could have thrown about 20 bucks to the campaign. The point was the pointlessness of comparing Dean to everybody and their first cousin.

11. Ahhh, but I can't afford to contribute whenever just ANY chump makes
a comparison. I reserve the honors for DU posts. Links don't count.

13. Rip Off
I'm trying to make Dean some money, or at least bleed his supporters here dry until they have to pawn their computers...

6. Dean's nothing like any of these - except maybe McGovern
Brown was honest. While I don't like McCain and I was only impressed with Goldwater shortly before his death when I noticed he had turned liberal, I believe they were both more honest than Dean. Carter continues to be one of the most honorable men who has ever been in politics. McGovern was chosen by Nixon. This may be the one reference that has something in common with Dean. Dean wanted a postponement of the war. Nixon ran on an anti-war campaign in 68.

8. Goldwater always
had liberal stances on social issues throughout his political career. What he was most known for was being strong on military, he was always for gay rights, abortion and always maintained a stance on against big government. He never felt like the government should be involved in consenting sex between two men and felt like the government shouldn't get involved in medical stuff, where I think Dean got that position from or maybe I am wrong because he probaly felt that way because he was a doctor. He also felt that the republican party has "been hijacked by a bunch of kooks." which we must all agree with. But the thing he was known as a conservative was about his stances on small government, government shouldn't be intervening in personal lives and medical procedures, and his stance on having a strong and powerfull military which eventually led him to be the chairman of the powerfull Armed Service Committee. He done many great things for this state of Arizona which I have great respect for him, also I would of rather had him President in 1964 then LBJ, the only time I would rather have a republican then a democrat in office. Now if you feel Goldwater and McCain are more honest then Dean which would be a very valid point, can you site an example of Dean's dishonesty?
